They are, but even spare parts have value

I’m no GM, but this trade confused me. I think it was an ok return for Meier, but Sharks gave up the best player.

I’m also reading that Karlsson looks to be staying with SJ past the deadline. Isn’t Meier a player you could build around, while Karlsson (who is having a career year) could have been someone they dealt to acquire solid assets? Maybe there is more to the story that I am missing, but I wouldn’t be happy with how things are playing out if I’m a Sharks fan.

My guess is that the Sharks don't want to retain another contract long term with Brent Burns. He's on the books for 2 more yrs ($2.72m/yr), and retaining salary on Karlsson could heavily limit what they do moving forward. And if they were to retain, they wanted to be compensated well for it.

And sounds like the real only suitor was Edmonton, and that is way to creative of a trade for Holland to get this done in the season. It'll be a summer deal if it's done. And we all know Meier would only be a SJS next yr is if he signed his QO of $10m, then walking in 2024-25. And if he was to sign the QO, they would need to move salary out. And if they weren't able to do that, they'd trade an RFA player and maybe get just a 1st. They at least got the peripheral stuff now.

There is a solution if Sharks dont want to retain another deal, just take on another bad contract!

    Yamamoto (3.1m) or Pulljarvi (3.0m)
    +
    Barrie (4.5m)
    +
    Foegele (2.75m)
    +
    Janmark (1.25m)
    =
    $11.6-11.7m

Fill it out with picks and/or Broberg/Bouchard and we are good to go. If # of contracts are an issue, Sharks can send some back to Edmonton for them to waive

It would be a god damn travesty if:

    a) EK doesnt get moved, not making the playoffs during a 100-pt season is sad. he only gets so many more kicks at the can
    b) EK gets hurt again after the deadline, crushing the market of teams willing to trade for him
    c) Not giving Mcjesus an absolute stud back there. you dont need to defend when you have the puck all the time haha

EK has a No Movement Clause. He has not been asked to move it, nor have there been discussions for him to do so.

Originally, He didn't want to leave Ottawa. Exceptional circumstances led to him being traded.
This is not a player that wants nor likes moving around.

My prediction, if he ever waives his NMC - It is to Ottawa. No where else.

This is not in Edmonton's control. It's in Karlsson's control.

Edm needs D that can keep the puck out of their net. EK is not a great defender.

They need Ekholm, Gavrikov, Schenn etc. Even Chychrun - much more cost efficient.

Time to move on from the Karlsson dream

I wont give up the dream hahaha!

Nevertheless, Im simply pointing out that the money part is workable if the 3 parties (Sharks, Oilers, Karlsson) want to get it done. If all 3 arent aligned it wont happen that goes without saying.

Terrible asset management on his part.

Doesn’t matter if EK told him he’s not waiving the NTC.
    Nothing Grier can do.
