I’m also reading that Karlsson looks to be staying with SJ past the deadline. Isn’t Meier a player you could build around, while Karlsson (who is having a career year) could have been someone they dealt to acquire solid assets? Maybe there is more to the story that I am missing, but I wouldn’t be happy with how things are playing out if I’m a Sharks fan.
My guess is that the Sharks don't want to retain another contract long term with Brent Burns. He's on the books for 2 more yrs ($2.72m/yr), and retaining salary on Karlsson could heavily limit what they do moving forward. And if they were to retain, they wanted to be compensated well for it.
And sounds like the real only suitor was Edmonton, and that is way to creative of a trade for Holland to get this done in the season. It'll be a summer deal if it's done. And we all know Meier would only be a SJS next yr is if he signed his QO of $10m, then walking in 2024-25. And if he was to sign the QO, they would need to move salary out. And if they weren't able to do that, they'd trade an RFA player and maybe get just a 1st. They at least got the peripheral stuff now.
