Good contract for the Sens. It lets Lehner prove himself if he wants a big payday.
Less than 5M for two quality goalies this season, well done Ottawa!
The pay is pretty indicative of them expecting him to take a full load in year 3.

Nice signing for Ottawa.. Lehner is undoubtedly the future for Ottawa between the pipes!!

Lehner had no leverage himself as he hasn't played a lot in the league so he hasn't earned the money yet. He couldn't just negotiate more money based on Anderson's situation.
It is highly unlikely anderson is here next year, IMO. I'd say no chance at his point, and when they talk about free agents coming up, they never talk about him. If you can have your starter earning 2 mill then that's a win, I don't see the problem.
And just to clarify, if the guy sucks and he's earning 2 mill then that sucks, obviously, but if you're confident in the guy and he plays well, I don't see why he can't have a lower salary than the average starting goalie
like most Sens contracts, the money goes up every year based on rising cap and progression of the player. Lehner has a chance to earn a big contract next time around.
This is great news for salary cap leagues. Long time waiting for Sens fans for this young guy to take the reins (potentially), and hopefully he does well so the Bishop for Conacher trade looks a bit better.

exactly. It isn't to say that the Sens don't bring in a veteran backup on a one-year deal to give Lehner some support, but I don't see Anderson sticking around. He will want to be the starter somewhere and I think Ottawa is confident that Lehner can be a starter. The actual salary he is getting paid has nothing to do with their intentions for him next year.

I agree that Anderson will likely not stick.. But at that low cost, either Lehner ends up being a steal of a workhorse starter half way through the deal (unlikely in my view) or the Sens platoon him with a very capable veteran backup/tandem guy, until the end of the deal (much more likely IMO). Lehner got a big leash last year and nearly choked himself with it (exaggeration, but Anderson played better than him), so he definitely didn't have a tonne of leverage and certainly is not a runaway starter. This year will tell a lot.

I don't think anything would be decided with Anderson yet. If he plays well and helps the team win, there would be no reason not to bring him back unless he asks for the moon in terms of money and length of deal.
If lehner was the starter this year, ottawa makes the playoffs.
