I remember when Zaitsev signed the deal declaring that it was reasonable considering ~$4M was now the standard rate for decent defensemen on their 2nd contract, but that thing's been an albatross for a while and now they're paying just to get off the money.

Big win for Chicago though. He'll help the tank, this year and next, plus he's a body to throw out there so they don't have to throw their young defensemen to the wolves at the NHL level. Oh, and at next year's deadline I bet they even find a way to get another pick selling Zaitsev to someone for defensive depth.

yup, was thinking the same....not sure why tho as i find it hard to believe they will make it...but getting rid of that contract is good no matter if you make playoffs or not

Was just reading on Twitter the Sens might be in on Chychrun
And other reports they're looking to bring Karlsson back.
And even others they're looking at Dumba & want an extension in place first.

Not too many non-playoff teams give away picks like this.
Last year wasted a 3rd acquiring Hamonic.

I was thinking that dumping Zaitsev was merely to clear some more room for the incoming owners to figure some things out, but go get Chychrun!
