Who knows, good luck trying to predict Babcock. I just hope he doesn't go back to the 1A/1B setup and spread everybody out again.

Barrie is a PP specialist but Rielly is a core Leaf and coming off a 72pt season himself. I'm not sure who gets that spot now.

Leafs don’t care about spending cash. It’s the cap hit that matters. It’s their one salary cap advantage... real money rich.

This deal is a real old fashion hockey trade. Leafs dealt from their strength- forward to fill a need... well void - defence.

in 24 hours Dubai’s has replaced Zaitsev and Gardiner with Ceci and Barrie.

It sucks to lose Kadri... but they still have one of the best 1-2 C punches in the NHL.

Leafs have 11.06m in cap space before LTIR Horton 5.3 - and added 2 RFAs in Ceci and Kerfoot... so something else will have to give for this to all work.

Dubas in 6mths has done more to address the Leafs blue line than perhaps the last 3gms combined.

meanwhile... Salic adds a solid #2C and is spending less on his top 2C than The Leafs are on Tavares alone....

The only thing that matters here was the cap hit. Leafs couldn’t care less to pay the $2M bonus to Kadri, just as the Zaitsev trade was in place before July 1st but waited to make it official until his bonus was paid.

This is what was thinking as well. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Don't love the cap machinations for the Leafs long-term but this deal gives them better fit and talent for at least one year.

Rumoured that a Kadri/Brodie deal was all but agreed to prior to this and Kadri nixed it. That would have been much worse for the Leafs but I would have liked it for the Flames.

I'm not so sure about that. If Barrie plays as well as suspect he will in Toronto, I wouldn't be surprised to see them deal Nylander to free up enough cap to sign him long-term.

It will be interesting to see if this really improves the Leafs D or not. Barrie is clearly a solid PP QB but that was never the issue for the Leafs. Barrie isnt known as a guy whose good in his own end. The he fact that hes small wont help him in his own end either. As I say, will be interesting.

As sad as it may seem, losing Hainsey could be a guy they regret losing for his actual defensive abilities. He wasn't great but they haven't brought anyone in to help in that department either.

Perfect world for who? Barrie’s fantasy owners? Basically every available study shows 4F-1D formations being significantly more effective than 3F-2D formations, even when the D are elite.

Yes, for owners of Rielly and/or Barrie.

I honestly see this as kind of a lateral move as far as Barrie is concerned. He goes from great deployment on an elite one-line team to lesser deployment on a much deeper team.

    .
Their defense is worse than it was to start last season by a significant margin.

They opened last season with Reilly, Gardiner, Hainsey, Zaitsev, Dermott and Ohziganov.

They now have Reilly, Muzzin, Barrie, Ceci, Dermott and Harpur (or Gravel).

I don't think that's an improvement at all. Gardiner's better than Muzzin, Zaitsev is better than Ceci and Ohziganov vs (Harpur/Gravel/guy they already had in the system) is not a meaningful upgrade at all. Barrie is a better PP guy than Hainsey but Hainsey's a better PKer and neither of them are great 5v5 so that's not really an upgrade when they already have Reilly on PP1.

Gardiner low key much, much better defensive impacts than Barrie.

I’d honestly like to see what metrics have Gardiner better than Muzzin and Barrie and Hainsey even at 5v5. I really don’t think that’s accurate at all. Zaitsev might be marginally better than Ceci, but Dermott might be better than both of them, and really your third pair just doesn’t matter that much.
