A LOT of goalies out there with contracts in that range these days. What happened to all the bargains around $2-3 million?

Gotta think TBL wanted a good place holder deal for their current #1 goalie without giving too much term. So they had to overpay a little bit? They must expect to see Andrey Vasilevskiy breaking in as a solid #1 before long.

I'm glad he didnt get some super long contract. Short term, good money. Looking forward to watching him earn it.

Its a bit expensive for one year full time. At least its short term.

Ultimately though you lock him in before he thinks he has too much leverage and leaves you stranded. And like we've said, short term so if it doesn't work out it doesn't work out.

Goalies are such a crap shoot these days so it really feels like anyone with talent gets locked in around the same price.

I suspect this is also why you rarely see anything longer than 4-years for goalies these days, aside from truly special talents

Anything more is a mistake. Goalies in the NHL these days are exactly like RB's in the NFL. The highly touted ones don't always pan out, guys come out of nowhere, shine for a few years, fade off into the distance. Very volatile position.

Perfect deal and bishop will cash in with another team after those two years

That's what I think as well. A little more money in return for short-term deal. This deal gives Vasilevskiy time to develop without needing to rush him. Two years in minors, then a year as a backup to Bishop and then either ready to take over the starting job or they give another deal to Bishop. Smart play by Yzerman, again.
