temek gets the first grade of "B".
6/10. well done.
(FWIW, I've seen some impressive number crunching from temek in that past... so his highest-score-so-far does not surprise me...)

ANSWERS to the Goalie Trivia.
1. a) 2.53 GAA (average goalie GAA)
There were 3821 goals in the NHL last year, which works out to 2.65 goals per game (per team).
However, 137 of those goals were empty netters. Only 3684 goals were scored with a goalie in net.
3684 goals / (87183.25 minutes played / 60 min per game) = 2.53
2. d) .911 SV% (average goalie SV%)
Total saves (SV) in the NHL this year = 38143.
Total shots (SOG/SA) in the NHL this year = 41827.
Divide and get an average SV% of .911
3. c) Shutout occurs every 7 games.
Total wins in the NHL this year = 720.
Total shutouts in the NHL this year = 104
Divide and get about 7 games per shutout. (This is similar to 2011-2012 as well).
4. b) 2.31 GAA (top 36 fantasy goalie).
If you take Yahoo!s top 36 "rank" goalies, you get the following:
57467.4 minutes played
2215 goals against.
2215 / (57467.4 / 60 min per game) = 2.31 GAA. (About two tenths better than the average goalie at 2.53)
5. c) .918 SV% (top 36 fantasy goalie)
24803 saves made
27018 shots face
Divide and get .918.
6. c) OT game occurs 22 times in 100 games.
It is a fairly consistent event that about 1 out of every 5 NHL games goes to overtime. This results in 10 points for wins and the extra OTL point. 11 standings points in 10 games. If you total up the standings for a full 82-game season, you'll find that the average team gets about 82x1.1=90pts. When looking at standings, 90pts is the "bar" for being an average team... and often, it is also the "bar" for making the playoffs.
7. d) 60%.
The NHL had 97 games decided in the shootout (97 SOW, 97 SOL).
The NHL had 162 games marked as OTL (which includes SO & OT).
Therefore, 97/162 = 60% make it to shootout.
I was shocked by this one too... it seems like practically every game goes to a shootout, but apparently 4/10 games are actually decided in those 5 minutes of 4-on-4.
This 60% was also consistent with the 2011-2012 season, so the lockout was not a freak season in this regard.
8. d) .642 SV%.
Players score a lot more often on breakaways/shootouts then any other instance.
Scoring 1/3 shots would be a .666 SV%, and usually that's what you'll see... about 1 goal in every 3 shootout shots.
This year, the shooters did a bit better than that,,, so the SV% was under .666.
9. c) Southeast.
No surprise. The southeast has terrible goalies (FLA, TB, WPG, CAR... leading the charge).
10. d) EDIT: Central.
CHI tandem, Rinne, Howard, STL goalies, Bobrovsky!
Easily the best division this year.
Hope everybody enjoyed that trivia.
Good numbers to know.

The prize for all participants... you get a sneak peak at my goalie spreadsheet with "category scores".
It's a work in the progress.
There are a ton of variable parameters (pink) that can be tweaked.
I tinker with the decimal place to try and get the black cell (a sum of rank errors) to minimize.
I haven't figured it out yet... but hopefully somebody can help me solve it.

Hey, any time. Let me know what you're thinking of and I'll do what I can.
Of course, this is the busiest month for my regular project, was handed a huge task yesterday by my boss's boss (but one that I will enjoy, and that will be good for my longer-term prospects), and received an email from a side work group saying to expect to put significantly more time into that effort over the next 3-4 weeks. On the other hand, I'm also being forced to take days off without pay thanks to the complete dysfunction of the US government, with specific instructions that I am not allowed to do any work while on furlough, so I'm feeling more motivated to work on hockey stats than any of that right now.
Sorry to vent! I know in the grand scheme I'm still a lucky bastard.

OK Penguin, I now saw your table, but because it's in pdf I can't get it into excel to mess with it. o you know a trick to do so? Or can you post a spreadsheet with the data?
Also, I believe you explained what the various numbers surrounding the stats were in a discussion last year, but if you can give some insight in the current layout that would be great.
