I was thinking about kickin' some tires on Karlsson. Would you guys give up Tavares for Karlsson?
Being the Sid of D is Tavares alone even enough?

Both first round picks in most hockey pools, but personally i rank tavares higher.

based on your league settings, i would consider it.
karlsson is a 70 point dman, a replacement level dman with your settings is probably 35 points so thats a +35.
tavares is a 90 point center, a replacement level forward with your settings is probably 55 points so thats also a +35.
you can adjust their projections based on your expectations but they should be within range. if you truly believe karlsson will maintain 70+ and you cant improve your D elsewhere, might be worth biting the bullet and doing it. in a one-year league though, yeah id be picking tavares first.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
I think I would rather own Tavares.
I have more faith in him keeping up the 80-90pts pace then I am a defenceman putting up 70+ pts.

Both are first round picks now, however I think Tavares has a higher ceiling. Karlsson is a high risk high reward player, and his point high is 80s. However, being a D, his points low I would say is 50-60s. This low prediction is just based on his position, not his talent. If he decides to be more defensive randomly next yr, his pts will plummet.
The way I compare Dpoints to Forward Points is simple and crude. I add 15 points to the D-man’s total. So Karlsson is projected for 75-80 points I would say which then turns into a 90-95pt comparison for a forward. I would say Tavares is 80-90pt forward as well. But like I said earlier, due to Karlssons position and his high risk mentality, he could drop down to 60pts very easily.
Your D do need help, and you can sacrifice a forward for sure, having Giroux, Tavares, and Sedin (who I think is going to have a bounce back). If someone offered me Tavares for Karlsson I would take it for sure. Maybe go for a draft pick as well, even if it’s a low pick upgrade it’s still something.
Bottom line, this is a pretty fair deal slightly leaning towards Tavares. Try and get a draft pick from him.

PS. As a Karlsson owner, he’s super fun to have, but he doesn’t consistently get points, it’s more of 3 at a time. Just keep that in mind.

I use the same method, however the fear of Karlsson becoming a more defensive d-man has me leaning towards Tavares who I believe still has another level to hit. I think it would be safer to project Karlsson as a 60-65 point d-man with upside and you won't get burned.

I share the same sentiments as many of the other posters. Keep Tavares as there appears to be greater risk of Karlsson's totals fluctuating as opposed to Tavares. Otherwise I would consider it.
75-80 is a bit high actually, I change my mind haha. He has averaged about 0.9 points per game (73.8points over 82 games). So projecting 68-75 may be a better range. If you don’t want to get burned, 65 expectation is a good number. 65 karlsson points would be 80 Tavares points. Which in reality is what I would say Tavares low is also.

If it was a d heavy scoring system then it would be karlsson.. You do need to improve your d, but if you lost Tavares it would really weaken your f a lot. With only 6 starting f and 4 starting d... I'd sure think on it... The gap between karlsson and your next drafted d seems like it could be more than the gap between Tavares and your next drafted f.
I'm not really sure which way I'd decide, I'd probably be thinking on who's points I could replace easier.
Six Forwards; Four Defensemen ... those are the relevant numbers from which to make your decision. 6 forwards x 13 teams = 78 forwards owned in your league // 4 Dmen x 13 teams = 52 Dmen owned in your league.
Essentially, you need to determine Karlsson's value relative to the 53rd ranked Dman in your league and then you have a value of Karlsson's VALUE ABOVE REPLACEMENT LEVEL. Do the same with Tavares and the 79th ranked forward in your league, and you will find Tavares' VALUE ABOVE REPLACEMENT.
Whichever player has the higher Value Above Replacement is the player who is "more valuable" in your format.

Tavares.

True that 27Blue! Maybe i'll try Giroux....
Thanks MounD - Let's say Tavares gets roughly 85 pts next year. 78th ranked forward has 51 pnts. 34 pnt difference.
Let's say Karlsson get's 70 pts. 52 ranked D man got 29 points. 41 pnt difference.
Tells me Karlsson is "more valuable".
I don't technically need help at D. With my keeper core i can go into the draft and use my first couple round picks on defencemen. Really the only D-men that are being kept year to year are top ten.
