I'm always in favor of players playing until they choose to go, even if it gets sad sometimes (Ryan Smyth comes to mind). It would have been nice for him to continue but he's going out on his own terms here.

Sad to see him go. Aside from the temper tantrum he threw in TB a couple of years ago, real class act.

Great player, will be in the HOF for sure - I'm glad he didn't try to stretch his career out. Class act and competitor his entire career.

A year too late, but at least he's done. Decent career, obviously, but I'm more likely to remember him as a whining baby than the former Art Ross and Stanley Cup winner. Not that he cares what I (or anyone) think about him, but it is too bad his career had to end the way it did.

Good call. Fantastic career.
A sad day for hockey (and for the guy who gave my draft picks to get him)
I didn't expect this, although I do think it's time. E will always be an inspiration for undersized players.
Shocked, but so happy he's going out at the first sign of decline so we can better remember him as a stud who just kept producing. He could have eked one more reasonably productive year, but chose not to go out that way.

A career will almost always be 1 yr too long situation. You won’t see Crosby putting up 80pt seasons then retiring. A player will go until there’s a big drop off, just like what Marty did.
He literally opened the door for smaller players to play, without him, Gaudreau and TJ might not have been what they are now.

Didn't think he'd retire this offseason. He was fun to watch and always rooted for him since we're the same size (unreal what he was able to do in the NHL- I can't do that in my beer leagues).
Outside of the way he separated from TB, he displayed the utmost professionalism.
Props to him for going out on his own terms.

Good for him. Inspiration to undersized kids everywhere.
Will be interesting to see if he ever makes the HOF... they'll probably make him wait a long time.
Helluva player, and even better man.
@SmittysRant
Congratulations on a great career.
I played against him in University when he was playing for Vermont.
One of my all time favorite players.
