But coach Todd McLellan said he did not consider that a case of stripping Joe Thornton of the captaincy because Thornton would have the opportunity to earn it back. The same, he said, was true of San Jose's lone assistant captain, Patrick Marleau.

I mentioned this a week or so ago, but I'm thinking all of this stuff that is going on with Thornton (trade rumours, stripping him of his captaincy, etc.) will motivate him this season. I expect 85-90 points.

How often has this actually happened where the 'C' was stripped v the player voluntarily giving it up? Rick Vaive comes to mind for missing practice.. are there others?

i wouldn't be surprised if Thornton and Marleau fly this year. No pressure to be a leader and just let them play. If trade does happen, I would love to see him in a Leaf jersey.

It always makes me a bit sad when proper publications and actual hockey people say or write assistant captain. It's alternate captain, although it's a lost cause to fight it anymore. Same with compete level. Oh well...
