    It's just that the reasoning is pretty "weak" on the call. If they call that play all yr, it's fine. But if they don't, that's where the issue lies. It was the "right" call based on rules, but if that's the way they're calling it from now on, might as well play the game with wiffle balls and bats.

    Maybe they see it as clause 3 he broke. Like after he slide, he didn’t attempt to stay on the bag? That’s what is being reported now. Which I get, but man that’s such a BS grey area call.

    If a runner does not engage in a bona fide slide, and initiates (or attempts to make) contact with the fielder for the purpose of breaking up a double play, he should be called for interference under this Rule 6.01. A "bona fide slide" for purposes of Rule 6.01 occurs when the runner:

    (1) begins his slide (i.e., makes contact with the ground) before reaching the base;

    (2) is able and attempts to reach the base with his hand or foot;

    (3) is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and

    (4) slides within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.

    My guess is they thought the swipe was contact with the fielder to break up the DB.

    Except by definition it is a bona fide slide, so it should have negated the thing I bolded.
    Nice find and breakdown. I get the intent of the rule (protect middel infielders especially now that review is costing double plays on the "neighbourhood rule") and I'm ok with how the rule is drafted but I cannot see how JB's slide was not a textbook legal slide under the new rule. I hope we at least get an explanation from MLB.

    If I had to argue for MLB I'd say that either:
    1. Bautista was not "able and did attempt to remain on the base". When Bautista reaches for the foot of the 2B he gives up his efforts to remain on the base. or
    2. That this was simply interference with a fielder Rule 7.09, not under the new rule.

    All in all I really hate the call, it was minimal contact at best and the 2B was in no risk of injury (which is what MLB wants to prevent). On the one hand I want to demand that MLB call every minor contact at 2nd base this season but on the other I think that would hurt the game. Tough loss for the Jays, great pitching by Sanchez.

    They won’t say he broke Rule 7.09 rule because it’s a rule that is nonrenewable, and they reversed the umps call based on a review. The league wouldn’t admit to that being wrong.

    They'll just say (and i think have said), he didn't attempt to stay on the bag

    Very nice point. That just adds to the ridiculousness; how is one judgment call (7.09) non-reviewable and another judgment call (6.01) reviewable? That's completely inconsistent, judgment calls should either be reviewable or not.

    Because reviews just happened is my guess. The whole process is still being ironed out. It’s like how is offside leading to a goal challengeable, but not if someone beats out an icing when he didn’t really beat the defenseman and it leads to a goal.

    With baseball, I think this was just such a rash/quick rule being made; they didn’t think it all the way through. Baseball doesn’t do change, and it shows in their process. I would just hope they change it moving forward. They did a good job with the time between innings, going even further this yr with mound trips.

    David Price must have been doing rain dances all week to avoid the Jays in the SkyDome. To go from pitching Saturday, to Sunday to not at all this weekend is annoying tho. Would have set up a big mental game if the Jays dominated him in one of them. But now Price will likely pitch against Toronto in Boston next week.

    There’s no knuckleball matchup anymore. The Red Sox game yesterday was cancelled so everyone’s pitching day got pushed back. Wright (BRS knuckleballer) is pitching Sunday.

    - - - Updated - - -

    Which is why Price isn’t pitching vs Toronto anymore.

    Likely see him in Boston next week anyways vs the Jays. With Donaldson hurting and the rest of the Jays bats not in full tilt yet, this may be a good thing.

    That was hard to watch.

    7-2 lead, stroman pitching... losing is inexcusable there.

    Our bullpen is looking pathetic this year.
