What did happen with Wennberg? He had such a good year in 16/17. I guess Dubois coming in probably didn't help him all that much either.
I do trust Portzline so if he's talking about this, I'd like to think he's getting this info on the up and up. At this point, it's clearly still a rumor and thats why I labelled it so, but still interesting if it happens.

The Athletic: Has it come to this? #CBJ said to be considering a contract buyout of struggling center Alexander Wennberg; it makes huge financial sense for them to act this off-season

Ya, it's hard to say. In the article it does make good reasoning why they would consider it. Due to his age, the biggest reason is only owing him 1/3 of the amount instead of 2/3s if they wait until next year.
Wennberg’s salary cap hit is $4.9 million, but he’s due to make $5.35 million in each of the final three years of the deal, or $16.05 million total.
If the Blue Jackets bought out his contract this offseason, they would owe him only one-third of that, or $5.35 million. Spread over six years — two years for each remaining year of his contract — it means Columbus would pay Wennberg $891,667 a year through 2025-26.
His new salary cap figure, according to CapFriendly, would be $441,667 for the next three seasons, then $891,667 for the following three seasons (2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26). The Blue Jackets would clear $4,458,333 off the salary cap figure over the next three seasons and save a whopping $10,700,000 overall.
If they waited until next season, the Blue Jackets would save only $3.5 million by buying out the remaining two years of Wennberg’s deal, and they’d owe him $1,792,000 a year for the following four seasons.

He has some upside but the results are not there. He's become very replaceable.

You think the fact that they signed Grigo played a part in that possible buy-out?

Interestingly, Wennberg's 2017-18 was only different from his 2016-17 in two main ways.
1. He played 66gp, rather than a full 80gp.
2. He had 21ppa in the big year, but only 2ppga in the follow-up year.
It's something to always "buyer beware"... the token assists on a dynamic PP.
You take those 21ppa off his 59pts year... and we see him more of a 38pt player... which is what he is.
I mean... that PP1 was just clicking that year - which even made Sam Gagner look good!!!
[It was the additions of BOTH... Panarin AND PLD that bumped Wennberg off PP1.]
$5m/year... for a guy that does 35-40pts at even strength.
It was always a bit much... and is way too much if you aren't using him on a PP1 unit.
Shitty timing with the buyout window sliding back to this weekend as he literally just turned 26. In a normal year, they buy him out in June and get him for 1/3rd of the contract spread over double the years instead of 2/3rds for players 26 or older.

I think for buyout purposes he's still being treated as under-26.

Pretty sure everything is being played as though the buyouts were happening in June/July. This is not a normal offseason.
