The NHL made an official statement:

The National Hockey League condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine and urges a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible. Effective immediately, we are suspending our relationships with our business partners in Russia and we are pausing our Russian language social and digital media sites. In addition, we are discontinuing any consideration of Russia as a location for any future competitions involving the NHL.

We also remain concerned about the well-being of the players from Russia, who play in the NHL on behalf of their NHL Clubs, and not on behalf of Russia. We understand they and their families are being placed in an extremely difficult position.

along the same vein. Sadly it is not uncommon for individuals with (or looking like) they have heritage of a country which is hated being attacked in North America (physically or verbally) for that mere association. Russians in the NHL are obviously highly visible and known to be Russian nationals. I would expect all Russian born NHL players are getting enhanced security, starting with Ovechkin who is the most recognizable Russian by far.

Hopefully distain for Putin and Russian government actions can be separated from attacking individuals. At least NHL players have the resources to protect themselves, your average Russian heritage citizen just trying to survive does not.

I worry about the lasting affects this has on people from Russia. Just like how people from China that had nothing to do with covid originating there received hate. It blows my mind that Hasek could even entertain that thought.

Sports are an important part of Putin's legitimacy and pride. It's not entirely the same but also not entirely dissimilar from sports federations across all sports form banning team Russia from competing, but I don't really see anyone speaking out against that in the same way, likely because it doesn't affect their favorite team/player in the same way. Which again, I'm not necessarily saying I would support some type of move against Russian NHL players, just saying that it would have some impact on Putin.

That happened back in 2014 and a couple of days ago the block was blown up by Russian troops. So unless something happened recently I haven't seen, Crimea should be getting some water for the first time in yrs that wasn't falling from the sky
