"I'm fairly certain Auston Matthews just signed the largest contract in NHL history by a player who currently ranks 82nd among forwards in ice time."
Earlier today Bob MacKenzie discussed how the Leafs could afford both Matthews and Marner - here is the link. https://www.tsn.ca/video/how-can-the...roster~1603242
He based his projections on a $85.0 million cap and a 20 man roster - not 23. He figures with a little give and take on guys like Johnsson and Kapanen, it could be done with a 23 man roster.
He also projected Matthews salary to be $11.5 - pretty close to what Matthews got.

So is this the hometown discount Leafs fans were adamant Matthews was gonna take then?
Go leafs go!!!!!!!!!

If he wins a couple cups in TO, no one will begrudge him retiring in the desert with the rest of the Coyotes.
Yes it is...with regards to term. That’s what makes this a more palatable deal for the Leafs from a cap standpoint. They are all in for the next 5-6years and by taking a shorter contract (less money overall - you know...shorter contract means less money) it allows the team more flexibility with the rest of the roster. Duh.

There is no home town discount on this deal. No one is saying there is.
Toronto's not his hometown, so that statement alone, is false on its face.
Same with Nylander.
He's now the 2nd highest paid player in the game - behind only McDavid.
Pridham is one of THE best capologist GM's (Asst) in the game. Hell, he wrote the damn thing for the NHL.
Personally, I"m enjoying the random, meaningless troll comments that are getting thrown in this thread and then unabashedly ignored by everyone else that posts.

Yeap- the Hawks never won another Cup after those 10.5 contracts kicked in. The Seabrook contract completely closed their Cup window.
But one thing these contracts do is pay players for future performance rather than what they have done in the past. In a hard cap league you cannot pay for past performance.

Anyone who didn't see Matthews getting somewhere around $11M has clearly been living under a rock. I think most expected him to be locked up longer than 5 years though.

The Hometown discount refers to players who sign with the team they’ve been with for a while/that drafted them and brought them along....their hockey home. They take less (in AAV and/or term) than they could demand on the open market to stay with the team they are with. It doesn’t mean it’s actually their hometown. I hadn’t really heard that term used with regards to Matthews because he’s an RFA not a UFA - which is where the term is more often used.
