Talking to The Hollywood Reporter at the season four premiere, Martin says the idea of a big-screen Thrones movie is being "actively discussed," adding:
"It all depends on how long the main series runs... Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."
He also said that the other possibility under discussion is a big-screen movie based on his "Dunk and Egg" stories, which take place years before the main book series and involve people who are related to the Game of Thrones characters in ways that he won't specify. "I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more."
Reading between the lines, it sounds as though Martin is having a bit of a debate with the HBO team — everyone at HBO, including the network's president, has recently expressed a preference for the show to last seven seasons, or eight at the most. Martin, meanwhile, seems to have believed that the HBO show would devote at least three seasons to the combined events of A Dance With Dragons and A Feast For Crows, before giving a couple seasons each to the final two books. The show has done a pretty brilliant job of streamlining Martin's storytelling up to this point, and you can see some storylines are already in position to move forward way more quickly on television than in the books.
For what it's worth, I don't know that I'd be that keen on seeing Thrones conclude as a two-hour movie — and if Martin is upset at the idea of A Dream of Spring being told in just ten hours on television, just imagine if that massive tome ends up being told in only two hours instead. A movie conclusion would necessarily focus more on big fight scenes and VFX shots, and less on characters getting the resolution they deserve.
I still believe that Martin can avoid having the show catch up to him, though — he just needs to publish Winds of Winter within a year from now, so it comes out before season five starts. And then he would have two years, give or take, to write the final book. Assuming the final book is just letting all the shoes he's been carefully suspending drop, that might not be impossible. One way or another, though, this is going to be fascinating — we've never seen a situation quite like this before.

Hollywood, they're like a pack of wolves circling the outskirts of everything good
I just want them to adapt this story as truly as they can to the books and for Martin to finish them up in such a way that he's pleased with the outcome. It's an incredible story and an incredible series, there's no need to compromise it or spin a movie off it...hell each episode is like a movie in and of itself.
Movie = bad idea for this story.
Cash cow yes... but a movie wouldn't do this story justice.
I agree completely. I've always loved the ability of a TV show to go farther in depth with story and characters than a movie ever can. Some things just aren't made for the big screen. Game of Thrones is one of them.
A movie would just take so much away from it. You'd never get the same depth of story that TV show can. And considering the loss of depth that you see from the books to the TV show, I can't see a movie being a good idea.

Oh I disagree completely. Have you read all the books? There has been very little compromise in 'depth' in the transition from the written word to the screen...condensed? yes, absolutely, restructured for clarity or flow? also yes...but I think the producers have done an amazing job bringing Martin's vision to life (and the actors have just been amazing as well). While I love his writing, Martin is extremely verbose, if they were to include every tiny detail he writes the series would be 25 years long and tedious to watch.
Too much unnecessary porn and glorified fighting instead of character development and resolution. They speed everything up, and leave out crucial details that help the reader understand what's REALLY happening. The show is OK ... yes. But c'mon people. Reading is always better.

This is old news, but its one that may not die. Now, if HBO did the movie their way as in like a 2 hour episode, that would be fine if it was done right. Now if they did them like someone said before about the Targaryens or something like that. Or a movie about the attack on King's Landing where we see Robert in his glory and maybe find out who Jon Snow's mom is, that would be awesome.

Agreed, but the HBO version of "learning the identity of Jon Snow's mum" would just become an hour and a half of "brothel" scenes as a poor excuse to show fit, naked bodies. The Martin story is awesome stuff, it really is. I loved the books, and this is coming from a person who usually despises the "fantasy" genre ... but the HBO show is way too excessive with the sexual content, and allows it to take precedent over developing KEY plot details in a sensitive, intelligent manner. I have no beef with showing naked bodies, and indeed, there is a time and a place for that. Nudity and sex isn't a problem until it takes away from time that could be used to develop MAJOR elements of the plot structure and character development that have seemingly been ignored / abrogated into something totally different and, often, nonsensical.
I just want Martin's story to be portrayed in all its glory, and I don't think HBO has done the best job of executing that goal.

Yeah there is some of that to be sure, but it's a delicate balance they have to strike when producing the show and for the most part they deliver in spades.
You can't ever expect the movie/show to mimic the book in all things, they're completely different mediums and as such they require different presentations...pacing is MUCH more important in a 1 hour show than it is a couple chapters in a book. In a book you create the universe in your imagination, as you read each page you are drawn further and further into your imagination and so it doesn't matter as much if you hit 30 pages of Martin tying little threads together and laying the groundwork for what is to come next. In fact that's much more crucial in the writing of a book than a TV show because you have to fully paint the picture for the reader...on the screen you can often accomplish the same through a couple carefully chosen shots/scenes...in fact you HAVE to simply due to time constraints.
I've heard similar arguments before about the amount of gratuitous sex and violence in the show but I would argue that the book is extremely violent and bawdy as well.
There's plenty of sex in the books, to be sure. But in my opinion, most of it has some tie to the overall storytelling. And as far as that sex goes, I'm totally fine with it (aside from the portrayal of Jamie / Cersei at Joffrey's funeral-thing; don't get me started on GoT turning Jamie into a rapist) when it's part of the story. But HBO's GoT has a lot of "extra" stuff that was never part of the story to begin with. That's really all I'm talking about.
