I want to say Ward, but it's pretty clear that Smith soundly trounced him this past season.

Ward is about as secure as they come. Great situation for him. Lots of games. He's established.

Smith has done it once, but then he did it in all world fashion. Hard not to like him, but wouldn't we all feel better if he had done it twice?

Is Phoenix stable? Is Phoenix falling?

Is Carolina stable? Is Carolina rising?

Teams factor into the goaltenders status.

It's important that you go with the guy you trust in this circumstance. That leaves two reasonable answers.

Ward's the safer option but Smith has a higher ceiling in Tippett's system. Because Tippett focuses on limiting quality shots and not shots as a whole Smith will see a ton of shots again next year. If he's successful again he'll score big points in both sv% and saves. Smith is in the pefect place for him to succeed and is a better option for next year. Long term I'm not sold on Smith outside of Phoenix/Tippet's system, but I'd still take a shot on Smith for 1 year and move him if he and Tippett are separated (might also move him if he and Burke are separated).

I hate to call Smith a one year wonder, but lets be honest, he doesnt have the soundest history. He has had a great year no doubt about it but thats all his career has been to this point.

With Ward you know what you are getting. A true #1 (and has been for years now), a Stanley Cup Winner, a Conn Smythe winner.. do I need to go on?

    Ward without a doubt.

Smith was always a pretty good prospect.

For some reason we trust Wardo more. not me. Smith is great & Tippetts system makes him greater.

Check Ward's stats over the last few seasons. In the OP's league categories, Ward ranges from OK to terrible. Yet he's considered safe. He's safe to continue what he's produced over the last few seasons - nothing special.

Im going to have to go with Smith here. Tippett's system has been a lot more efficient and successful than anything implemented in Carolina. Remember.....Bryzgalov succeeded in Phoenix.

I recall reading the ramblings and forums back when Smith was in Tampa, he was constantly getting slammed for being shite. Sure he plays on a better defensive team now but id take Ward over Smith, Better Career stats and Pedigree. But i think Smith probably has the better trade value right now
