    Default Toronto Makes Playoffs!!

    Well, I hope so anyway.

Consider this weird tidbit of info:

If TOR makes the playoffs, their record will likely be 41-30-11, or a .500 winning percentage but it could be as bad as 40-31-11 which would be a .488 winning percentage. If Toronto makes it, that means the Habs won\'t and the worst possible record that MTL can have is 42-34-6 or .512 and they could be as good as 43-33-6 or .524.

Tell me again how it makes sense for a team that has a .524 winning percentage to miss the playoffs to a team that has a .488 winning percentage?

Some discussion will likely surround the winning percentage calculation. I often hear announcers and so called hockey experts say that a team with a 40-31-11 record is over 500. That is simply wrong. How many games did they play? 82. How many did they win? 40. What percentage of the games they played end in a win for them? 40/82 is the answer. Not 40/(40+31).

I agree that the points system is stupid.
If you took it to the extreme a team could go 40-0-42 (W-L-OTL). They would get 122 points, likely lead the NHL, and still have a \'losing record.\' It is not how many you win, it is how many you don\'t lose in regulation time.
However, I don\'t think the NHL really cares if it is stupid or not and it does create some interesting \'races\'

Default A.J. Burnett soon to be a Pirate

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Yankees have agreed to cover $20 million of the $33 million still owed to A.J. Burnett in a trade with the Pirates.
The Yankees will receive two low-level minor leaguers in the deal, which needs to be approved by the commissioner's office. Burnett will also have to pass a physical, which he is expected to take Sunday. The 35-year-old right-hander has a good chance to bounce back in 2012 while playing in the National League and in a more pitcher-friendly home park.

Interesting deal for the Pirates. How often have we seem then trade FOR a veteran. Normally, they are trading away talent for prospects. Interesting move.

yes very true. But here recently they are turning a corner. Growing alot down in their system, now if they can hold onto those players long term or not, we'll see.

This trade also helps improve Burnett's numbers.

    Indeed.

He leaves a hitter's park plus the NY media. He goes to a more of a pitchers park, less pressure in Pittsburgh, better division to pitch in, weaker teams. etc.

Getting out of the AL East is great, BUT Burnett probably just went from a 14-15 win guy with a 5.60 ERA to an 8-10 win guy with a 4.70. He'll need a ton of K's to carry much value, and is a great example of a guy with good name recognition who will go well before he should in most drafts.

burnett seems like a good gamble in deep deep drafts. someone that can strikeout that many guys has some one year upside moving to the national league and into a division that no longer has pujols and fielder.
