Not sure about that argument. What exactly do you mean by "cornerstone"? I can't think of many teams on which I wouldn't include their top offensive D, let alone one that topped a PPG two years in a row, as a "cornerstone".
If they key word is "is", then essentially its a circular argument. I think the previous poster's point is that one, even 2 injury-plagued down years should not prevent a return to form in the future. The counter-argument that Green is currently not an offensive powerhouse is not disputed.

Difference is Spezza has two "down" seasons but he was still essentially a ppg (over .90 ppg) in the games he played. Gaborik was a bit farther off from a ppg player last year but he still scored at .77 ppg pace. Green hasnt scored at anywhere close to a ppg pace since the 09-10 season and over the last 2 season he has scored at a 0.38 ppg pace, thats a HUGE dropoff.
I stand by my argument. Ottawa relied on Spezza for offense, and NYR relied on Gaborik for offense. If Ottawa loses Spezza or NYR lose Gaborik, it would be big trouble. Not so with Green on Wahington. Carlson, Hamrlik and Wideman are all good offensive D, and their forwards, no matter how poorly they play, are a threat night in and night out. Washington can do without Green.

Green is definitely elite, but he is, IMO, no longer 70 point elite. 50-55 is where I peg him, if healthy, and if on Washington.

I watched tonight, and he was not too bad. Near 25 minutes of ice time. Played on PP and PK. He was not outplayed by opponent. I think he'll bounce back.
