It seems kid brother Granlund is with the team now, as I thought my box scores were going crazy. For example, last game, 3-2 after penalties:

    13:32 Somervuori E.
    Granlund M. + Granlund M.

    10:22 Somervuori E.
    Granlund M. + Granlund M.

    Penalties
    Granlund M.

From what I can tell, Granlund (the Elder) has been in on every Helsinki goal the last three games.

2+0 for Mikael yesterday against their biggest rival Jokerit. Here are links for both goals:

Granlund watch: Still cruising along, leading the SMLiiga with 20 points (6-14) in 15 games. Only seemed to miss one game from that incident a few weeks back. A few other names of note from the Finn league leaderboard: Pulkkinen in 23rd with 11 points, youngster Salomaki with 10 leading the Under-19s with Joel Armia just behind him (7). Baby Granlund has 4 in 12.

Every time I see this thread resurrected, I get excited and a little nervous -- either he's putting up points or he's had his head thrown into the boards again.

Glad this was a positive post!

Well you're not going to like this vid from last week: Jarkko Ruutu nails Granlund.

Luckily no injury for Granlund from the hit.

Granlund's club HIFK won't let him go to the World Juniors this season according to Finnish newspaper HBL. They don't want him to miss any regular season games, since the team is struggling and Granlund is obviously one of the key players in the team. Nothing official yet, but it's sounds quite reasonable. Shame though for Team Finland and North American fans.

I've heard that if he doesn't sign with the Wild by June he'll be a free agent, does anyone have any information on this? Is it possible that he waits it out to become a free agent? Are there any penalties or negatives to players that decide not to play with the team they were drafted by? If not I really don't see why he wouldn't just wait it out and sign with whoever he wants.

If he doesn't sign with Minnesota before July 1st he'll re-enter the draft. He won't be free agent by not signing with the Wild. The situation is similar as what it was with Tim Erixon this year. And there's no penalties for players not signing with the team they were drafted by (see Blake Wheeler, Tim Erixon etc as examples). This is a free world after all. Nobody forces you to sign if you don't want to do so. The negatives are that he re-enters the draft, can't choose which team then drafts him and might play himself out of the league without even playing a game (if the team doesn't trade him to place he wants to be, like Phoenix is doing with Kyle Turris).

And with Granlund you don't need to speculate with this nonsense. He will sign a contract with Minnesota Wild. I'll guarantee it.

By the way, Granlund will play in WJC. His team in SM-liiga can't and won't prevent him going to WJC.

I'm almost positive that Blake Wheeler signed with Boston as a FA but his situation may be different since I think after he was drafted by Phoenix he played one year of Juniors in the USHL then he played 4 years in college

Wheeler was totally different situation because of his college status.

    Rules of thumb :

    - When drafted, a player's rights is help by the team for a duration of two years (or 4/until the end of his term if the player goes to college).
    - These rights expire sometime in June.
    - If still draft eligible, (under the certain age requirement), he re-enters the draft. If not, they become a free agent.

Also, the rights count against the reserve list (the 50 contract limit/90 total rights limit. I think it's 90) on the unsigned (outside the 50) side.

But I wouldn't be worried with Granlund. He'll probably sign his ELC around January, following the WJC. He didn't sign with the Wild this year because of military obligations (if I am not mistaken) he wanted to complete in Finland.

Well yes, that's the agreement between the clubs and the Finnish Hockey Association, but this kind of arrangements have been seen before. Granlund will not participate in WJC because of some mild injury, and after the tournament has begun, he gets suddenly better and plays for HIFK.

Looks like Granlund is up to his old tricks again - a friend posted this earlier, appears Granlund got away with the same move from the WC against the Blues today or yesterday:
