Default Help Picking my 2nd Starting Goalie

    Hi everyone,

I have Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask locked up as my two goalie keepers, but I need to draft another starter to fill up my weekly starts. I have the #5 overall pick and the notable free agent goalies that are available are:

    -Steve Mason
    -James Reimer
    -Semyon Varlamov
    -Mike Smith
    -Devan Dubnyk

I'm leaning towards Mason, espcially with all the good news about him coming out of Columbus, but Smith could be a decent choice as Phoenix seems to be playing better and Smith should benefit from having Tippet as his coach. Is Mason my best bet to get performance this year as well as battle for one of my keeper spots next year?

    Here's the league info:
12 Team Daily H2H Limited (9) Keeper League. We start 6 Goalie games per week, and have 2 active goalie spots. Scoring: W(2), GA(-1.5), Saves(0.3), Shutout(3)

I'd take Mason out of that group.

Mason could very well be your guy, but I need a year of consistency before I trust him. For me your best option is Varlamov, I realize he has some injury concerns but hasn't shown to much poor play in his NHL career.

Mason only really has one quality year, and that is part of the defensively sound Columbus squad that also produced a fantastic year by Pascal Leclaire. We all know where he is right now.

    My 2 cents

I do hear what you're saying...I'm not convinced that Mason is back to his rookie year form. But between Varly's injury history, the fact he hasn't played a full regular season as a starter and Giggy is right there to step in as Colorado's #1, I think Mason is the safer pick. Granted, if Varly stays healthy and plays like he did in Washington, he'll put up the better numbers. I'm feeling it's too much of a risk though, since I need whomever I pick to play #1 minutes this year and not be another time share.
