Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith(notes) was shaken up at 10:39 of the first when Capitals left wing Brooks Laich(notes), who was penalized for interference on the goalkeeper, skated into him and made contact in the upper body-head area.
Smith remained in the game, but then left seven minutes into the second. There was no immediate word on why Smith, who missed half of last season with post-concussion symdrome, departed.

yeah they said he looked shaken up on the play but didnt mention anything about concussion problems or anything. so lets not jump to the worst. he got ran into and it wasnt a lite hit.. he took a good hit.

Mike Smith is out with a neck sprain.
The team said Smith is day-to-day, although his neck gave him serious problems during his eight month post-concussion ordeal. This sounds like something that could drag on. Bench him immediately and pick up backup Antero Niittymaki.
