How does NHL IR work?

With a number of players that are "injured" but not put on the IR, I wonder what is needed to put a player on the IR?

Does it have to be for a certain period of time? Or number of games? Other requirements?

Eg: Knuble - out 3-4 weeks, and 10 missed games would put it at 3 weeks & 1 day. Is there a reason why the Caps would not put him on the IR?

Once placed on IR the player must remain there for 7 days, although a team can place a player on IR retro-active as well.

The question isn't why NOT put him on IR, it's "why put him on iR" if the team has roster room then there is no reason to put him on IR. However if the roster is full and the team needs to call someone up from the minors, then placing the player on IR will make room.

There are also cap ramifications to consider, but I don't understand how those work, so I'll leave that to someone else.

It's also weird but in every pool I'm in Dubinsky isn't listed as injured eventhough we all know he's out for 4-6 weeks. I find that a bit weird. I'm talking about office pools of course.

yeah also not sure about cap issues and such

but with dubinsky he isnt on IR bc the rangers havent put him on there yet. they arent sure what they are going to do. not sure why or why not but thats what is being said.
