Default Necas (RFA) on the trade block?

We ear/read a lot of rumors on Necas being dealt to make/keep space under the cap to sign other key players.
Assuming he’s moving, what do you think Carolina is expecting as a return for an unsigned RFA?

It'd be a shame if the Kotkaniemi signing costs them Necas, who seems to only be scratching the surface. But as was astutely pointed out by P7 in the other thread about the Carolina GM situation, they have made so many good moves in recent years that I can't envision them doing something here that would be a net-negative to the team.

I could see a Kotkaniemi buyout happening.

    In my dreams:

CAR trades Necas (RFA) and Pesce (UFA) to VAN for Pettersson (11.6) and Hronek (RFA).

Not even sure its possible with Pesce's status let alone Petey's paycheck.

CAR has 8 UFA nd 6 RFA - no wonder Wadell left, too much work.

Kuznetsov too, although Washington already made him a less bitter pill to swallow and he's only on the books for this coming season.

I think Kotkaniemi is still too young to see what his future potential (within this contract) will be.
That said, Carolina shouldn't bee too worried looking for him to blossom in years 3-5 in that contract (this coming season or the next two); they'd have preferred to see it THIS year, I'm sure.

With $27m in current cap space, help me understand who they aren't signing when bridging some of these RFAs shouldn't be a horrendous affair to keep under the cap.
Pesce - if he wants a raise, he certainly didn't play much like it... est cap hit: $4.25m
Skjei - turned it on late in the year, great to retain... est cap hit: $5.75m
Jarvis - rough one, but you need to hold him, not worth Svech $... est cap hit: $6m

That leaves $11m for Necas, Noesen, Drury, R. Suzuki, Martinook, Deangelo, Chatfield, .... so a few 1m's and Necas' ... $5m ? for 2 years (bridge) before a bigger deal as a UFA when Burns' contract is done, and orlov's expires.

Teravainen - won't get a new contract with Carolina, I can't imagine... - Good luck in free agency!
Guentzel - turned down $8.5 from the Pens, probably wants $8m+ - Have fun where ever you land!
    TKL - Tiered Keeper League - 2/4, 4/6, 5/rest + 1 GK - 4c, 4r, 4l, 6d, 2gk, 5bn

This is where I could see Carolina parting with Necas
Because I think that Guentzel will eat 9+ M$ from the 11 you mentioned

Tough part for Necas, at age 25, is that Carolina is going to hand a better contract to Seth Jarvis, age 22.
And they've already handed more money to Svechnikov (8 x $7.75m).

    Necas is a bit fugged, because he's RFA-Arb and he had 53pts in 77gp with a -9.
    I don't think that'll shine too well.

Personally, I think Carolina simply goes to RFA with Necas.
Like a few teams last year, that works OK because it buys the team "buyout windows" on other players - beyond the standard NHL Free Agency.

So Carolina can roll into July 1, see what they can get.
Then try to put a number on Jarvis.
Then walk to arbitration with Necas...
And then use whatever buyout window... if they need to... on somebody (maybe Kotka).

    There's advantage to this delay/window.
So I really don't see Necas getting traded.

[That said - capfriendly also lists Jack Drury and Comtois as RFA-Arb... so they can open a window by delaying on an agreement with those guys as well.)

Carolina has a LOT to do.
Extension options open with their D that UFA in 2025 (Slavin, Orlov, Burns).
Pesce, Skjei, Chatfield, TonyD are all UFA.

So... their top 7D are all UFA this summer or next.
Probably gave Waddell an ulcer to have to contemplate all that!!!
    Heavy. Very heavy.

Anyways - I think Necas is the farthest out of their problems.
They'll put a number on him close to last, of their group.

If they hand $9m to Guentzel (who will be 30 next year and then playing in the trending decline years) - they don't have $5m to sign 5 players at $1m and won't have a full roster (or will deplete funds for their depth).

Guentzel is a part that was nice to have for a push this year, but doesn't make a whole lot of sense with their average forward's age - 26!

They could try to 'strike now' with Jake, but I think the smarter contracts are with the crew they can have for the next 6-7 years (in their prime) without putting up the biggest contract on the team to a 30 y/o player who would end that stretch with an inflated contract - the next Brent Burns for them, but at almost twice the cost.

I think to keep Jake, you'd want to move Kotkaniemi to free up the $5m - which was mostly on line 4 (with some faltering) this season - and then you can (probably) keep the rest of the group.

Necas increasing his value with a great performance at the Worlds. If the plan is indeed to trade him, the Canes must be loving this.

Also: maybe getting freed from Rod Brind’Amour system is really what he needs to reach his potential.

I agree. Plus, when you look at his linemates this season there is a lot of Kotkaniemi, Drury, Kuznetsov, and Bunting. According to Frozen Tools, he never played with Aho, Jarvis, and Guentzel and very little with Svech. That 56 pt pace with 2nd to 3rd line mates doesn't look as lackluster. I've got him in a league and would not consider moving him until I see if he gets moved.
