I'm super curious what a non-stinky Utah name would be...
I actually don't mind Outlaws, especially the sound of "Utah Outlaws". It's unique and they could have some fun with the logos. I think they'll avoid it though due to the apparent negative connotation. Several kind of boring names go away too.
I wonder if the players of Utah will have any input in this?

Outlaws would seem like a safe choice
I think the Outlaws is a good name. Hope it's that and not some of the others being bandied about. Hive, Buzz, Powder, Canyons ... yuck.
I actually like the Yeti, but agree that's far too close to what's now associated with the Avalanche to pass muster. Would also be kind of little brothering the franchise to the Avalanche in my eyes given their geographic proximity to boot.

35 years ago... awesome name.
Today - ain't.gonna.happen.
[Outlaws is... basically... the people that stormed the US Capitol on Jan6. ]
[I mean... there may be some people in Utah that don't mind that... but normally you don't want a word that could rub 40%+ of the population in a bad way.]
It's been done.... 40 years ago... but it's been done...
[Jeez... I'm old... I remember the USFL. Hell - it had Doug Flutie for a while!!!]
I'm honestly surprised it's on the list.
Moreso... I wonder what percentage of the population is OK with this term.
I mean... let's just go with Pillagers or Thieves or Bandits... well... we have a minor league hockey org in Georgia called the bandits... so...
Is the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL inappropriate in todays society?

"Cleavage is like the sun. You can look, but dont stare.. Unless you're wearing sunglasses."
Oh man, if we're really at the point as a society where naming a team the Outlaws or the Bandits is too offensive ... yeesh. It's more cartoonish than anything.
What about the Buccaneers (Tampa Bay)? Or the Pirates (Pittsburgh)? Or, as Axe says, the Hitmen (Calgary)? What about Hurricanes -- those things kill lots and lots of people and ruin lives.
Not to mention the Rebels (University of Mississippi) or the Runnin' Rebels (University of Nevada Las Vegas)? Or the Blue Devils (Duke) or Blue Demons (DePaul University)? Or the Warriors (Golden State, University of Hawaii)? Or the Padres (San Diego)?
The point is, while I understand the pushback against cultural misappropriation and slurs in historical team names and changing them in light of social mores having developed for the better, there has to be a line somewhere.

They are all offensive!!! All of them! (said with false fortitude)
(Personally - I don't care... but yes, it's a different world. Honestly - who is the last "EDGY" sports team named?!?)
Go with an animal. People like animals, it's easy to make it a mascot, you can support wildlife foundation charities...
Hockey already has:
Ducks
Coyotes
Bruins (Bears)
Cats (Panthers)
Penguins
Sharks
Kraken (Mythical)
And whatever that Philadelphia creature is; I think it represents the Wild, Predators, and the garbage (or river rats) in the Schuykill River.
Point is, animals make the best team names.

Apparently two of the final four team names being considered are Mammoth and Yeti
^Based on a reddit thread... I'm suspecting that it's going to be Yeti.
They get to piggyback on the consumer-item marketing...
And kids love that shit (fuzzy mascot ish characters).
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comm...mark_the_yeti/
Apparently though - Blizzard, Venom, and Fury were the first three...

I'm not sure what the Wasatch Sports Factory is... but that one trademarks Utah Yetis all the way back to July 2023...
https://uspto.report/company/Wasatch-Sports-Factory
So if there was any "hint" given to Smith & SLC by Bettman - they would've gotten on it ASAP.
Articles suggest Smith & Bettman first met two years ago...
And the sale from Arizona to SLC (via NHL) seemed put in place around March.
https://www.deseret.com/sports/2024/...-gary-bettman/
So a name would've been decided / picked-out well before March 2024.
That makes the July 2023 trademark of Utah Yetis a "likelihood"...
And that makes all the April 2024 "trademarks" as more of a smokescreen.
The address on the Wasatch Sports Factory is a tiny apartment...
13463 S Mule Creek Cove Draper, UTAH UNITED STATES 84020
(was sold Sept.2023... so whoever formed the company - is also gone/sold...)
Any diggers good at finding who lived there?
And whether that name can be internet-connected with Ryan Smith?
Found the connection to company (Wasatch Sports Factory) and resident of address (Tyler Kluger).
https://www.linkedin.com/in/tyler-kugler-6a8a04140/
Now... what was his drive in trademarking the name in July 2023?!?
Per Twitter - yes, Ryan Smith did "buy the trademark" from Kluger:

[I wonder what a "sale" like that gets a guy]
[Side story: In 1996, I was at University with a guy that said he owned the rights to the www.walmart.com website. Not sure if he was BS-ing or not. I'll have to look him up. Walmart, per internet search, didn't actually have its own website on the world-wide-web up & running until 2000...]
