That seems like a pretty good bargain. But it also seems to say, "You have this long to prove this team can win before I start looking elsewhere".
EF is reporting a 2yr, $3.9m aav deal for Bouchard.

Oilers have $3,509,208 in cap space, so the $3,900,000 deal would put them $390,792 over the cap with a roster of 13F/7D/2G and Brandon Sutter on a PTO.
Dylan Holloway is the only player that is waiver exempt on the roster. And they have Connor Brown at a really easy Performance bonus they need to keep an eye on for next yr (10games played = $3,225,000)
Refresher, teams are allowed to go over the cap by 7.5% due to a performance bonus, but any dollar over the cap gets rolled over to 2024-25 cap. He'll likely hit the performance bonus, which if they are right up against the cap when the season ends, they'll have roughly $13mill in space to cover about 7 spots (no significant player needs a pay raise in 2024-25)

I would have rather locked him up long term but the money isn't there right now, so a bridge it is. Assuming he stays on this protectory, the next one will be a doozy.

Losing a depth player to waivers to be cap-compliant is fine so Oilers will be fine cap-wise.
The issue that will need a solution are the upcoming contract extensions that will need to take place in 2 seasons or so.....aka how much will it cost to dump Jack Campbell's contract?
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
Great value for the team for 2 years.
The Oilers are in a cap spot where they had no other shot.
This signing is going to hurt in 2 seasons when a dominant Bouchard is at least as valuable as Darnell Nurse who is making $9.25m.
Hopefully TV deals shoot the cap up by then...

I think they go with the 21 man roster. With #LetsGoOilers signing Bouchard for 2*$3.9M per @FriedgeHNIC, have $382K proj cap space for 21 players (12F/7D/2G)
They’re pretty well locked into a 21-player roster. They could replace Pederson (775K) on our projected roster with player up to $1.15M

Injuries through out the year will help solve being slightly over cap. Though it's nicer to have some space come trade deadline to boost the roster.

I like it. Bouchard is a bargain at least for the next 2 years. McDavid will help him fetch a nice juicy contract on the next one.
Yeah, this is where it likely goes. With their propensity to skate 11F/7D, this doesn't totally limit their flexibility. Certainly they were hoping to carry a larger roster and also to accrue more cap space throughout the year but that was always going to be tough in this negotiation. The ballpark was set with the K'Andre Miller signing, and considering that 3.5-4.0M range was all they had to spend anyhow it became inevitable that this was the sort of contract that got agreed upon.
Real nice bargain for the next two years and then they pay the piper. Not dissimilar to how it played out with Darnell Nurse. Bouchard is going to be staring down a 10M deal after all the points he racks up and a rising cap.
CapFriendly has yet to update with this contract.
A day later.
I don't think it is done
