DeAngelo expected to be traded back to Carolina

He was a really good fit in Carolina, I like this move for the player and both teams. Philly and their fans never really seemed to want him anyway.

The latest is that DeAngelo is being deal back for a prospect, and the the Flyers are retaining half DeAngelo's salary.

To sum up:
Flyers game up a 2022 4th, a 2023 3rd, and a 2024 2nd for one year of DeAngelo. Thanks, Chuck.

Rule 50.5 of the NHL CBA protects against a team trading a player, having another team pick up a percentage of their salary, and then quickly reacquiring that player at a reduced cap cost. It states that "under no circumstances may a Club reacquire, as part of a Retained Salary Transaction, the contract of a player who was on that Club's Reserve List within the past calendar year."

If the Flyers didn't retain any salary, the transaction would be allowed. But since the salary retention is a key to the deal, it's being held by the NHL. The league is expected to continue to discuss the matter at the NHL draft this week in Nashville, Tennessee.

DeAngelo had 11 goals and 31 assists in 70 games with the Flyers. He was scratched on multiple occasions by coach John Tortorella late in the season. DeAngelo played one season with the Hurricanes in 2021-22 and tallied 51 points in 64 games.

Fascinating. This obviously wasnt the spirit of the rule but I imagine if both teams are patient it should get done in a few weeks.

They don't allow this, but allow that trade the Caps and Colorado did in 2018 where the Caps traded Orpik and Grubauer to the Avs for a 2nd round pick, Avs buyout Orpik, then the Caps sign Orpik for a lower cap hit a month later.

It should get done really soon as this situation isn't meant to protect what's happening here.

It's also so silly that they are going to allow the transaction in 3 weeks or whatever but not now. There's no games going on between now and then, there is literally no impact to the extra two weeks.

Chuck Fletcher's D-moves for PHI have to go down as the one of the worst GM's for D management of NHL all-time.

(Ryan Ellis trade was pretty much a wash, since Nolan Patrick and Philippe Myers were both busts).

For Ristolainen, he gave a 14th overall in 2021 and a 2nd in 2023
For DeAngelo, he gave a 2nd (2023)/3rd/4th round picks
For moving Ghost off roster, he gave a 2nd (2022)

All told: 1st, (3) 2nds, a 3rd, a 4th... basically, for Rasmus Ristolainen.
