Good for Bear to get a chance again. Not going to make a huge difference to the Canucks' blueline situation overall, but maybe he can chip in to get things turned in the right direction.
Vancouver acquires Ethan Bear (D) for 5th round pick and a non-NHL roster player.
Carolina is retaining some salary.
Info above is from Friedman and Weekes.
Hurricanes will retain 18% of Bear's cap hit ($396,000). So he'll have a $1.804 cap hit in Vancouver.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. He's a marginal NHL Dman who won't help Vancouver much where they need it most.

The Canucks making another move that wastes money, and doesn't move the Championship Needle.

Good for Bear, he should play a decent role in Vancouver. But for the Canucks, this feels a little useless as I agree it won't move the needle much.
low risk high reward move for the canucks. Well done.
Hell... there's a handful of less significant needles than the Championship one that likely won't be impacted by this move. I guess he's a body?
But for Bear himself... I'm happy he's getting a fresh opportunity. I hope he proves me wrong and finds success in Vancity!
Canucks D is battered right now so now was the time. Even if he just fills the minutes at replacement level that is an improvement, the Canucks were running 3 AHL D out there for several of their losses
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
He's probably a mid-pair guy at best, but getting him for close to nothing is a win.

This is a great trade for Vancouver. Bear was a top pairing dman in both Edmonton and in Carolina before he had Covid last year. If he is fully recovered, he is a great addition to the Canucks and will quickly become their top right side dman.
