at least there's somewhat of an update...
Adams also confirmed that Eichel will start the season on long-term injured reserve as he remains in a holding pattern with the team on how to best treat his neck injury.
"I think we would all agree that we were hoping to avoid surgery…unfortunately, yesterday Jack did not pass his physical. At this point, Jack is not willing to move forward with what our doctors are suggesting...we will continue to work toward a solution," Adams said.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Wednesday that there is nothing close on the trade front for Eichel, who has been looking for a trade throughout the off-season.
"Well, it’s tough to pinpoint a timeline but we do know there is ongoing discussions with Jack Eichel’s agent Pat Brisson and Kevyn Adams, the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. They’re on good terms, they have an excellent relationship," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "We also know that Jack Eichel will start the regular season on LTIR. Now, he saw a team of specialists over the course of the off-season. Some encouraged the artificial disc replacement surgery; however, the Buffalo Sabres remain adamant that the fusion surgery is the best option.
"It’s possible that Eichel gets traded and has the disc replacement surgery under the blessing of a new club, but there’s no guarantee and it doesn’t seem like anything is real close on that front."

Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel fails physical, stripped of captaincy
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/...pped-captaincy
I mean... if the Sabres can't get picks... it's in their best interest to stink-it-up for another year or two.
Good players in the next two drafts. Kevyn Adams (GM) knows this.
Eichel is young... long-contract.
No rush for the Sabres. They hold the cards here.
Eichel is going to end up committing to the surgery... rest... and then be dealt once he passes a physical to show other NHL teams.
[I don't see the "No Movement Clause" holding any water. Eichel will want out of Buffalo. Not playing hockey will drive him mad. He's a hockey player.]
I think there is less than zero chance Eichel will commit to the fusion surgery. Not at this point. And as an owner, I hope he does not.
Perhaps this has already been discussed, but what would happen if Eichel got the surgery he wants, against his team's wishes?
Would his contract become void? Would he become a UFA? I mean, if I'm Eichel, that might be worth it. Then he gets the surgery he wants and he can sign with any team he wants. I suppose there's a risk that if the surgery doesn't work, and his career is over, then he'd be out millions of dollars.
I just don't know...he's earned over $32 million in his career already. If I were Eichel, and I had full confidence in my doctors, I'd take the risk. I'm financially set for life no matter what happens, and if the surgery is a success, I control my own future.

Fantasy wise, we thinking he's going to end up on Red-flagged / IR slot or does the team eventually suspend him and he can't be put in an IR slot?

Kevin Adams has said he'll be placed on LTIR. I'm quite curious how much of his contract is insured.
I don't get the reasoning behind LTIR vs IR unless it's insurance based. Maybe LTIR gets a larger coverage than IR because there's no cap reason to LTIR him.

I assumed it could have something to do with insurance but when I was looking it up Joe DiBiase (@SneakyJoeSports) pointed out that putting Eichel on LTIR would put the Sabres beneath the cap-floor so maybe he won't be put on LTIR. As far as I know the quote about Eichel going on LTIR came from Dreger.
It seems very Buffalo to say LTIR without knowing they can or can't do that lol.

Wow, I hadn't looked it up when I posted that but if Eichel is LTIRed, even with the overpaid Skinner and Okposo contracts on their books, Buffalo would be nearly $7 million under the cap-floor!
