The Jays are and will always be the bargaining leverage that players use to get the teams they really want to sign with to pony up. It's unfortunate but it's just the way it is.
I think a lot of it is Rogers not allowing them to go over 5yrs on deals. Rogers does hold a lot of what the organization can do contract wise when Toronto needs to overpay to get guys.
The future deals is something they need to kind of think of, again, when Rogers won't allow them to do much.
Also another obstacle that the Jays are facing is that players don't like the uncertainty on where the Jays will be playing (Toronto/Buffalo). Which if I'm a top player, not knowing if I'll be playing in an MLB stadium or a AAA stadium would be a pretty big tipper. Not knowing the quality of the facility, or facing a AAA stadium vs Mets stadium...I'd be pretty swayed right there.
