I had thought he may be the guy Chicago loses in the expansion draft but he may end up being exempt (similar to Klefbom) if he misses the whole season. Opens up a spot for Pius Suter I suppose.
Is that true - if the guy is "injured" (LTIR or something) - that they can gain a special exemption from being Expansion draft eligible?
Hmm... wonder if teams will use that as a loophole by getting some guys signed up for "surgery".
Tell.me.more.
The "injury exemption" rule I remember reading about wasn't so much that guys on LTIR are exempt as it was they missed a certain number of games leading up to expansion. I don't remember the specifics and I'm not sure if missing a full 56 game season is enough games as well. I'll try to dig up the rule in a bit if no one else knows more about it.
I do recall last expansion something about players on LTIR could not be selected if I'm not mistaken.

From NHL.com - seems apply to Klefbom but not Nyladner...
* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a team's player exposure requirements unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection.

^Thanks, interesting.
With the 56-game schedule, yeah, it seems like somebody would basically need a carry-over injury and miss this entire season with something brutally severe.
I would also expect the 60 game number to be prorated to 40 or so for the shortened season? Maybe that doesn't make sense. Or just call the 56 games this year and leave it at that.
