Great move for both teams. Wings have some ground to cover to get to the floor.
Cap clearing move. Love it for Detroit. Why not.
Staal scored two goals and added nine assists over 52 games in 2019-20 before putting up a single goal over three playoff games in the Toronto bubble this summer.
The Thunder Bay, Ont., native has 43 goals and 145 assists over 892 career games. He has seven goals and 13 assists over 107 career playoff games.
Staal has one season remaining on a six-year, $34.2 million contract signed with the Rangers in January of 2015.
Great move for both teams. Wings have some ground to cover to get to the floor.

I like it better for Detroit. NY gets the relief but lose a 2nd round pick is a steep price to pay for the $5.7 mil but for only one year.
Detroit now has 4 picks in first 2 rounds this year and 4 picks in first 2 rounds next year.
Stevie loading up high picks.
Staal has never been the same player since the eye injury.
It was tough for this NYR fan to see one of NYs longest tenured players go this way
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
Good Move Detroit - gets a veteran D for 1 year to help their young D - add a pick
Good move Rangers - unload salary, open up spot for one of their young D

got to wonder if this means Deangelo is going to sign...if he does..there is still only 5 bodies on that blueline...Lundkvist signed in Europe but with late start maybe he can come over....does this mean Kandre gets a shot? be interesting...most likely they will try to sign someone cheap...

I mentioned this on Twitter but Staal should get a decent amount of ice time in Detroit as canon fodder. Young guys don't get overwhelmed if Staal is handling some of the tougher minutes. Might have sneaky multi-cat relevance in some leagues. Probably a reach, but it's something to consider.

Nice move by the Wings.
Knowing how to use cap space when you have it is important, and they get a veteran guy on a one year deal plus a second round pick for essentially nothing.

oh this one is tough to bear, thank you for everything Marc.
I wonder if Jordan Staal gets moved...he must be feeling a little left out.
Wow... a 2nd... nice take on 1yr of cap!
I wonder how slowly Yzerman played that!!!
