it's too early
Is it too early to consider giving up on Mittelstadt? Does anyone see him being anything more than a 3rd line centre in Buffalo?

I think he's locked in as a middle-6 guy in Buffalo. He's not a #1C with Eichel there.

There was a thread recently from someone who had just acquired Mittlestadt. Some varying ideas on him in this thread.

I wouldn't give up on him just yet. It's unlikely he establishes himself as a first line option, certainly not with JE in the picture, but I can see Mittelstadt becoming a very serviceable second line center with 50 - 60pt upside. He is still only 22 so I'd give things another year and see what happens, if he doesn't take a significant step forward next year then I'd be getting worried.

How many times did people pose the question about giving up on Teuvo Teravainen?
And Take a look at Teravainen’s 2014-15 season and compare it to Mittelstadta 2019-20 season.
I know it’s just coincidence.... but in those seasons:
- they both scored 9 points in 30 some NHL games.
- they both scored 25 points in 30 some AHL games.

I would give him one more year, and then evaluate where the Sabres are at as an organization. Cozens could be what's needed to get Mittelstadt going, but you just have to wait another year or two to see.
He should be a solid 55 - 60 point 2nd line guy. What that's worth to you will depend on your league. Now's the time to be looking to acquire him and not the time to be selling him.
I think third line might be his peak at centre, but as a winger he could thrive in a 1B/2A role.
