Who are the best (ranked highest from this past season in your league) current nhl players that will be available?
Hi All,
I have the 1st overall pick in my league. Pre-draft lottery I was really wanting Colorado to get that 1st overall pick and take Hughes, which I would then take in my draft.
Now that Hughes is going to NJ or NYR I don't know who I will take, Hughes or Kakko. Or do I take a more seasoned player?
Kakko is also killing it in the worlds right now, 5 Gs in 2 gms. Hughes is pointless on a much deeper team being the US.
I am curious who Dobber Nation thinks will be a better pick short term and long term. Does it matter if its NJ or NYR?
What say you, Hughes or Kakko? Neither? See point structure in my signature.

In my head I have Hughes compared to P. Kane as a centre, while Kakko compares to Barkov as a winger. Tough to go wrong with either, but I think the Hughes upside is better. Though if I'm an NHL GM, I have a little bit more pause as I like Kakko better as the overall player.

I too have the #1 pick and what Kakko is doing is definitely giving me something to think about.

I have first pick also in my league and it’s only the rookie class. I think Hughes is your pick no matter what. You have to realize that the media now is building up Kakko just so they can have this fun debate they do every year. Now how it all plays out fantasy wise is anyone’s guess. Just bc Hughes goes to NJ doesn’t mean his career is over as some say or that then Kakko gets the higher upside. Hall and nico and Hughes the team will look very different and scoring will be up.

I'm in the same boat and I'll give Kakko some more consideration but I can't see myself passing on Hughes. Hughes just seems like he was built for the type of hockey the NHL is becoming. His foot-speed and skating are elite and his natural ability to make quick decisions and pull off bold moves should take him a long way. He can always improve his weaker points like his shot and toughness as he grows but the aspects of his game he's near-mastered don't come along every day.
Unless your league heavily favours goals I think Hughes is your #1 no matter what team he winds up on. Which will be New Jersey, Shero has had to stop himself or walk back comments in interviews since the lottery where he's talked like Hughes is already part of the team. Shero is giddy that he gets the pleasure of drafting Hughes and you should be as well.
I am sure this wont be the first (I didn't search but I am sure there's others who have already asked) or last thread asking this question. I don't think either is a bad pick at this point in time but who knows who will develop better.
If I had the pick, it would depend on where my teams lacks. If I am not as deep down the middle, then Hughes. If I feel I am set down the middle for years, then I don't think anyone will question you for taking Kakko.

"Cleavage is like the sun. You can look, but dont stare.. Unless you're wearing sunglasses."
Your league is very goal heavy, therefore I'd go Kakko and NYR over Hughes in NJD. Either way, I see either of these two being a keeper over Ekblad come next year.
Ya so id argue that it won't be the best 96 players kept as the good teams will have to give up some solid players in a keep 6 (ie the best teams will have 6-10 guys they'll have to choose from and the bottom few will be in a similar tier to 5 and 6).
I wouldnt rush or commit to this decision too early as there's a good chance I wouldn't be selecting either kakko or Hughes first overall in a keep 6.
Edit: of course it depends who's a available but I would just suggest keeping an open mind. In a keep 6 you can be competitive every single year and winning that year should be top priority. It's easy to over value prospects and leave a 60-70 point player on the board.

I know what you are saying but Kakko looks AWESOME against men in this tournament and Hughes has looked lackluster. Probably still go with Hughes. I moved up in the lottery from #3 to #1 so I made a huge upgrade either way. Now if the owner with the #2 pick really wanted to move up one pick.....

I hear what you're saying here but I remember thinking the same about Drouin looking great at the U20's while MacKinnon didn't look so hot. I don't know how that would compare to the mens tournament/linemates/possible injuries etc. affecting performance but its something to consider.
I'm not saying Kappo MIGHT not be the better player but to just remember that this tournament so far only provides a small sample size.

I don't mean to derail the OP, but I am in the same boat but our keeper league will have a "reset" in 3 years when we draft completely new teams (so all new keepers). So who would you rather own between Hughes and Kakko for the next 3 years only in a goal-heavy scoring system? With Kakko's recent play at the WHC, I am leaning towards him since I think he could be really productive right from his first year in the NHL given his physical maturity, whereas Hughes may take a full year to adjust to playing against NHL men as his body develops. In the long-term, I think its still Hughes because his ceiling is largely considered higher than Kakko...but perhaps that gap is less than we think? If Kakko is a Barkov type player in terms of his power, vision, IQ, but plays RW and with perhaps better stick handling and more goal scoring ability, could we expect Pat Laine type production from Kakko in his first couple years in the NHL?

For a points only league Hughes, its really conditional to Hall extending his contract in NJ. Its his contract year next year. If Hall leaves there is essentially no star to play with Hughes besides Hischier. If Hall stays I think eventually like 2 years from now he grows into the 1C role and that would be magic.
Kakko looks amazing and looks like he will no doubt become a star but the question is will he become the part the Laine way (instantaneous) or the Barkov way (gradual).
A combo with Hall long term is too good to pass up. When Shero finally makes his pick hopefully Hall extends ASAP!
