Interview number two...with the Ducks GM...
Why did you decide to become a co-commish?
Was kind of random how it all happened, I was in the draft room a lot during the inaugural draft and made a couple suggestions to fix things and Peng gave me commish access.
Since then I’ve helped out here and there where I could when it comes to more administrative type stuff.
I’ve got a lot of experience with the Fantrax platform and I’m on the site a lot.
I’ve got OCD. #ObsessiveCompulsiveDuck
If you were the only commish what is one aspect/rule you would change?
Hmmm tough question….might be the minor system we have in place.
I’d either allow the streaming of Minor to Pro, so you could make line changes as you wish or if you bring up a player from the minors, he’s up for the year kind of thing.
Basically I prefer to let Fantrax do all the work, so whenever we throw in stuff that needs to be manually tracked/policed there’s always room for error, it’s just human nature.
Now to your team...
Why just a duck..? Why not mighty?
A nod to the movie series and the original team, plus there’s tons of good reaction gifs to use.
And the millennial hipster in me wanted to be different.
Are your phone notifications set to a quack quack sound?
Haha! No, but maybe I should change it.
My duck phone moves in silence.
After a hot start are the Ducks now becoming a buyer?
We’ll see how things go, but probably not.
After I decided to rebuild/retool last year I wanted to try and not force things. I did that the first couple seasons and fell short in the playoffs due to my lack of depth and goaltending. That being said, I’m always active on the trade front, so if an opportunity arises I’ll make some offers, but I’m not sacrificing some of the young promising assets I’ve acquired.
Did you expect to be this competitive so soon into your rebuild?
Not at all, I thought I’d win a couple here and there off the back of Landeskog and Hellebuyck, but players like Nelson, Domi and Drouin have really been a huge surprises.
Had some lucky bounces as well against a couple of the upper echelon teams, I feel like I’ll fight for a playoff spot, but it’s going to be a tight race.
What did you think of two teams having the same team name?
I think they should have had a side bet or challenge to determine who keeps the name.
Winner renames the losing team's name.
Best WHL trade/worst trade you made?
Worst: Brayden Point & 1st for Carl Soderberg
A great example of selling assets to make a push, Soderberg fell of the map completely the next year and well we know what Point is doing.
Best: Subban & Raanta for Hellebucyk
I had a lot to choose from, but this one is my favorite because the goalie market in our league is so volatile and young elite tenders are hard to come by.
I benefitted from the fact that Moose also had Vasilevsky so he probably was a little more open to move a goalie than another GM may have been.
Who is the Ducks biggest rival in WHL?
The “Accept Trade” button haha
Which team name do you dislike the most?
Saanichton Cougars, because I don’t know how to read or say Saanichton.
Favourite hockey player? Current/all time?
Saku Koivu.
I’m a Montreal native and what Saku mean’t to Habs and the city is transcendent.
#SISU
Will you ever add Mighty to your team name?
Maybe if we acquire Adam Banks. #CakeEater
You can now ask me one question...
Which WHL GM gives the you most insider info and who gives you the least?
Good question...my source inside the Eagles and #Moose organizations give the most, least is a multi way tie with several teams...Victoria, Montreal, Grand Rapids, Oshawa, among others...no source = no rumours.
