I'm already under the impression Zetterberg is done. Hurts his potential wingers this year but also opens a spot for someone to climb the depth chart. Or maybe Frans Nielsen gets back over 40 points.

"Henrik's message to me is that his back has not reacted well, that he hasn't had an opportunity to really train. All signs indicate to me right now that it'll be very difficult for Henrik to be able to play."

Nooooooo. My dream of him being the new Leafs captain for 1 year looks to be dead.
Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Craig Custance @CraigCustanceJeff Blashill says in conversations with Henrik Zetterberg, Zetterberg said he's gotten very little training in this summer because of back. Blashill concedes that's it'd be all but impossible for Zetterberg to play this season without the proper off-season prep.
Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLiveYes. At this point, I'd be surprised if he plays again.
Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive#RedWings Jeff Blashill said it doesn't seem likely Henrik Zetterberg (back) will be ready to play, and if he's not he's not likely to play at all this season. Will know more when he has his pre-camp physical in mid-September.
If you guys are not on Twitter, you're missing out.#RedWings Blashill said if Zetterberg doesn't play he'll move Andreas Athanasiou to 3rd line center, behind Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen, with Luke Glendening centering fourth line. Darren Helm will play wing.
I feel like Athanasiou could be the big beneficiary, as he would be more like a 2C in terms of offensive deployment and potential wingers. Also, with Zetterberg done he would probably get some more secondary PP2 time. May be a decent sleeper candidate.

Yeah, in terms of total ice-time I'm sure Nielsen will be the 2C ... I guess I just meant in terms of the deployment / zone starts. I don't think Athanasiou is going to used nearly as much as Nielsen, and perhaps that's due to contract but whatever the case may be I'm thinking that Nielsen may get stuck with more "shutdown" type assignments. I guess we'll see how things shake out.

Just because a coach says something in August doesn't mean it'll hold true for the whole year
(I'm also betting on Nielsen but can't dismiss AA just because of a coach's quote)

Shocking how this perfectly correlated with Zetterberg's contract taking a nose dive and Detroit has a pressing need for cap space.
Re: Rasmussen and Zadina making the team.
Craig Custance is on record in multiple spots saying Rasmussen is guaranteed to be on the team regardless of what happens with Zetterberg, but the easiest reference to point you to is listen to his Full 60 podcast with Corey Pronman.
If Zetterberg plays, Zadina probably starts in the AHL, if Zetterberg doesn't play Zadina likely makes the team. Either way, Custance has basically guaranteed Rasmussen is playing in Detroit next year.
i think Zetterberg knew he was done when he said in August of 2017 that he probably wouldn't play out the rest of his contract and then had to backtrack his words. Is it a coincidence that his base salary this year falls to half of what it was last season?

Yeah I'm not saying things can't change but as of now, there's nothing suggesting AA would be getting some great opportunity to shine. The Red Wings don't really have enough good wingers to have some for him as well. Mantha, Rasmussen, Zadina, Nyquist, Abdelkader, Vanek... Those wingers don't scream fantasy gold for their #3C.
