Re: Tim Lincecum
He was a strikeout guy, who could rely on a FB to get outs. So when he lost speed, he had to nibble, and that increased his walks, or bad the AB predictable (3-1 FB). He went from 94mph FB (in 2008) to a 90.4mph FB (in 2012), to an 87.7mph FB (in 2016). Dude just lost his speed, and it wasn’t like he was the most accurate thrower in the game. His walk rate despite such terrible numbers the back half of his career weren’t a HUGE difference.
Per his FB velocity too. In 2008 his average FB was 94, but he could pull back and get it to 99 if he needed too. In 2016 he was averaging 87.7, but could only reach back and get it up to 90. That’s a big difference.
He also had hip surgery to go along with his downfall, which made him alter his delivery. And because he had so many moving parts it was difficult to fully figure out the problem. Watch his hips in this video, pretty sure his delivery when he was in his prime caused his hip issues. So much torque going through there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExO9m7e7418
