Default Advice needed for the salary cap

    Hi Everyone,

In my keeper, we have a 93 000 000$ salary cap.
12 Forwards, 5 defenses and 2 goalies count.
    Points only league.

We have to dump two players and make some move...

    This is my team

    Alexander Ovechkin 10 000 000
    Derek Stepan 8 000 000
    Phil Kessel 9 000 000
    Jonathan Huberdeau 4 000 000
    Mikael Granlund 3 200 000
    Gustav Nyquist 4 250 000
    Nail Yakupov 2 500 000
    Teuvo Teravainen 833 000
    Ryan Strome RFA
    Valeri Nichushkin RFA
    Matt Duchene 6 000 000
    Evgeny Kuznetsov 3 400 000
    Jonathan Drouin 833 000
    Nikolaj Ehlers 925 000
    Dylan Larkin 925 000

    Rasmus Ristolainen RFA
    Cam Fowler 4 000 000
    Jacob Trouba RFA
    Morgan Rielly 5 000 000
    Dougie Hamilton 5 500 000
    Marek Zidlicky DUMP
    Seth Jones 5 400 000
    Brent Burns 5 760 000

    Jake Allen 2 500 000
    Jonathan Quick 7 000 000

This left me with 3 974 000$ for signing Trouba, Ristolainen, Nichushkin and Strome

So I want to dump Zidlicky but for the next move, I don't know if I trade Stepan or anything else?
    Thanks!

Stepan and Kessel are both bit cap hits, but they produce. Yak is 2.5mil of wasted space on your roster at the moment.
Duchene and Nyquist are the other two I would look to move for cheaper alternatives.

Since you are in a points-only league, it becomes pretty simple to do the math and figure out who you should drop. For example, for things to be equal, if Yakupov scores 25 points, Stepan would need to score 80 points. It's obvious who will achieve that (and more) and who will not.

You can't take this approach towards everyone, because you have 11 other teams competing for the value contracts, but it should tell you pretty quickly who your outliers are, either for the good or for the bad.

The obvious and safe choice, to me, is to trade or drop Stepan. The toughest choice would be to trade Ovechkin. In a points-only league, he's not giving you nearly the same value as he does in a league with PPP, SOG, and other peripherals. Ovechkin would also probably give you a pretty big return, in addition to left over cap space for resigning your young players.

Don't do anything rash with Ovi right now, though. Start with Stepan, and go from there. That is my advice.

Stepan or Nyqvust are the easy moves for me

My first move would be to shop Stepan for whatever you can get (even picks). If no one bites I'd drop him (assuming there is no penalty to do so).

With 12M, you should be close to signing the four RFAs. If not, either drop Yak or Nyquist. If that's still not enough, maybe try to trade one of your Dmen for a cheap option and/or picks.

Agree with the masses, Stepan is your albatross at 8m. That's an awful lot of cap space to be spending on a 50pt player.

I would not be moving the D/men. All solid and on good contracts.

Call me crazy, but your best move is to trade Ovi.

In a points only league, you want to try to get at minimum 10points/$1m spent.

So Ovi has to put up 100 points in order to have any true value. Without your league being weighted more heavily for Goals there really is no reason to have such a large cap hit on your roster.

I do realize that Stepan and Kessel have high $$hits as well but looking at the ages of your players and there likely output vs $$$

    going with the 10pts/$1m system

    Ovi 71 points last year (100-71=29) he's a (-29) age 30, likely to decline
    Kessel 61 points last year (90-61=29) he's a (-29) age 28, still prime years
Stepan 53 points last year (80-53=27) he's a (-27) age 26, likely to increase point totals

All have similar #'s and no one is jumping out ahead of the others.

Here is the best part, of the three who is likely to fetch the best return, obviously its Ovechkin.

Look to move him for a Sleeper Star F coming of a sub par year (Taylor Hall or Tyler Johnson) + a top4 D
6 Team no limit Keeper. Cap league $100m
    Points only G/A=1, Hattrick = +3, Wins = 2, SO = +3, OTL/SOL = +1
12 Forwards, 6 Defense, 2 Goalies, 6 Reserve (any position)

    Forwards
    Crosby $8.7
    Stone $9.5
    Svechnikov $7.7
    Debrincat $6.4
    Hall $6
    Meier $6
    Guentzel $6
    Ehlers $6
    Hertl $5.6
    Konecny $5.5
    Palat $5.3
    JT Miller $5.2
    Garland $4.9
    Kakko $.9
    Laff $.9

    Defense
    Josi $9
    Burns $8
    Letang $7.2
    Nurse $5.6
    Werenski $5
    Sergachev $4.8
    Fox $.9

    Goalies
    Shesterkin $5.6
    Ullmark $5
    Hart $3.9
    Blackwood $2.8

It's a fair argument and depending on the return does make sense
