why does he want to have a one year deal only ?
Because he wants to turn that one-year deal into a more lucrative longer term deal next summer.
GO WINGS!
L.A. probably wants a Brown, Horton, Hemsky, or Ryan Whitney type deal (6 years in the 4 million range). Decent money to be sure, but in a long term it could look like an amazing steal by the end.
O’Sullivan wants to have a Mike Richards year first – then sign a contact. I don’t blame him at all. Look a what restricted free agents can get these days!!!
I am sure we are not talking \'pocket change\' here, even for NHL players. O’Sullivan could be missing out on 10 million dollars he signs a 5 year 20-million dollar contact as a opposed to a 5 year 30 million dollar contact next season. It could happen - There are over 60 players who are going to make 6 million or over this coming season. If the year goes well O’Sullivan could easily be considered a top 60 player in the NHL.
as long as he plays!!!I mean...It\'s never good for a player to miss the training camp!!!
So He needs to play right now!
The Kings want a 3-year deal. We could expect they are ready to give him something like A Kostytsyn receive in Montreal this summer (10,5M$ / 3 year). These two guys are at the same point (one year with some call ups from the minors followed by one full-NHL year, 50+ points).
But the Kings said that the problem is not only the duration of the contract, but the fact that O\'sullivan asking way over what they expect he will. So, how much is he asking? 4M-5M $ for one-year deal? Is this guy a fool?
here \'s more info too...really close to what you guys are saying

what should I do...trade him or keep it?
Lombardi wanted a 5 year initially, but also added that O\'Sully was unproven and thus shouldn\'t cost much to lock up long term. O\'Sully\'s agent responded with the idea that they\'d do a one year deal for cheap and bolster O\'Sully\'s experience and prove he\'s a solid player, then sign a long term the next year. Patrick WANTS to stay in LA for as long as possible, but he doesn\'t want to sign a 3 or 5 year deal for 3 million, when that\'s lowballing him.
It\'s not the money as much as it is the term.

O\'Sully/Lombardi, if you\'re reading this:
How about a 2yr/7.5m CTR and we call it a compromise and carry on. Cheers.
