Center Marcus Johansson was not at practice on Tuesday because of an illness, and Capitals Coach Barry Trotz said he doesn’t know if Johansson will play on Wednesday night against the Montreal Canadiens.

“We sent him home after he came today,” Trotz said. “We’ll see where he is tomorrow. He’ll probably skate, and then we’ll make that decision tomorrow.

“It’s just a flu. It’s going around right now, so the more we can keep him away, the better.”

The Capitals won’t have a morning skate on Wednesday. Johansson missed morning skate on Monday because of the illness, but Trotz said he would be probable for the game against the Arizona Coyotes. When he got to Verizon Center, Johansson got an IV, but told Trotz he didn’t have strength and didn’t think he would be a positive impact on the game. Mike Richards centered the third line in his place, and he scored the game-winning goal, his first as a Capitals player.

Richards had also centered the third line when Johansson missed four games with an upper-body injury after the all-star break. Andre Burakovsky took on Johansson’s role on the first power play unit against the Coyotes. Johansson has 14 goals and 20 assists this season.
