Enforcers don’t get traded midseason when their team is winning. If you know the league, you know that it just doesn’t happen.
“I’m not sure what to say, John. This is how it goes. We’re trying to make our team better. We had a chance to get a player, and we took it.”
Did the league pressure ARI to trade him so he would not participate in the ASG?
What do you think?
First off; that was a great piece by John Scott, gut wrenching and well said, and pretty funny at parts. Also, he was classy enough to not throw any individual management person under the bus, and even kept the names of those supporting him private.
Secondly; there is zero doubt in my mind that the NHL was instrumental in forcing the activity that made Scott ineligible for the ASG and only after the backlash did they reverse their position (which they were smart/lucky enough not to ever formally take. i.e. the league never formally came out and said "John Scott cannot be in the ASG as he's in the AHL). Bob McKenzie reported that both the Coyotes and the NHL asked Scott to bow out of the ASG and he refused; that request is the equivalent of a veteran coach being "asked" to resign. It was reported by numerous reporters that Arizona was opposed to sending him to the minors given his salary ($575k), but Montreal had no problem doing it, thus the trade was orchestrated, Scott was sent down and the NHL hoped that would end the problem. Luckily for Scott the fans were vocal enough that they got the decision (again which was never formally made) reversed. The really terrible part is that even though Scott still gets to play in the ASG he still ends up moving his family from Arizona to Newfoundland all because the NHL didn't have any foresight whatsoever.
