Martin had to deal with a knuckleballer, a corner painter, flame throwers, and non-accurate hard thrower (Sanchez). I’m prolly biased, but I think Martin had a harder time prepping to get thrown at, had some great behind the plate catches, and was the best catcher at throwing out potential steals.
Good points on the catcher... It's like comparing an excellent offensive D-man and a shutdown D-man, they play the same position but have much different strengths.
Also, even though Pillar did not win a Gold Glove, he did win the AL Defensive Player of the Year at CF. What's the difference you ask? well:
Unlike the Gold Glove awards, which MLB coaches and managers vote on, the Defensive Player of the Year Award has a specific criterion: Winners come from a formula that incorporates different metrics to determine the best glove magicians MLB had to offer in 2015.
