(Rumour) Cory Murphy to Ottawa?

Murphy had a poor year after suffering through what apparently was the worst shoulder bruise in sports history, keeping him out for about three months. Murphy still has value as a puck-moving defenseman and power play quarterback. With Ballard now in the fold and Van Ryn\'s wrist problems behind him, Murphy is probably the odd man out in Fla. What more do Ott need, and to boot I belive he\'s from Ontario.

Not sure how much validity that rumor has but it might make a little too much sense to really happen. Ottawa would even be getting Murphy on the cheap since he is only on the books for this coming season at 875 thousand. Florida might just figure he is worth keeping around for depth and insurance at that price and moving him at the deadline to a team looking for some talent on the blueline for a run. I am not sure what Ottawa has going through their heads. Funny to think that their blueline has featured Chara, Redden, and Mez at some point but is now filled with the likes of Kuba, Brian Lee, and still Phillips.

Isn\'t he supposed to be going to Toronto in the deal for McCabe? I\'d wait on rumors surrounding the Cats until we find out what happens with that deal first.

Well rumors have Van Ryn going to Toronto in the McCabe deal.

So if they view McCabe as an upgrade from that...which I would imagine they do..then perhaps they feel Murphy is expendable depending on what they receive in return.

As far as giving up on him, well yeah he hasn\'t been there long but he turns 31 in February. So its not like he\'s 21 and has a lot of time.

I am confused...A)Why would Ottawa be interested in Murphy, who has proven nothing, and is already considered a band-aid boy? B)What does Florida think they get in return, and why would any team even a desperate one like Ottawa give up anything? He has no real value, and as desperate as Ottawa is, what can they hope Murphy will actually give them? This is a team, while many believe they are still in the upper echelon of the league, it is unbelievable how fast they have fallen. If they were in the West, they would have no shot at a playoff spot, and even in the East, I think they are hit and miss. They have done nothing to improve the team, they have actually lost any form of a PP QB they once had, and they haven\'t addressed it. Which brings us back to Cory Murphy? I rest my case.

Well IMO Alfreddson can QB the Power Play. So they may be looking for something in particular to fill in. Whether or not that is Murphy depends on what it is they feel they need.

I don\'t think Murphy is all that bad and can be a decent option in terms of serviceable offensive D.I think he\'s had a set back or two, thats all. Not that hes great but he\'s ok when used correctly and comes cheap.

Though it is a rumor and its best not to buy in most of the time, there could be tangibles that we do not know about. I wouldn\'t call it that far fetched.

I think it would be a smart gamble to take. He doesn\'t cost a lot and has at least the potential to be useful.

Even if Van Ryn for McCabe goes down, I think that is even more reason he\'s gone. McCabe & JaBo man the points on the PP, and Murphy being a PP specialist would get pushed to PP2? That kinda seems like a waste.
Murphy had a string of excellent years in Europe followed by a very impressive worlds as the teams PP anchor (07\' I believe). Fla signed him to a 2-yr deal specifically for the PP and to aid Jay Bo. Unfortanetelly, for Murphy owners he got injured and had a horrible season given Fla\'s strong expectations. To label him a band-aid boy I think is a little premature, especially given the injury he had. Like Dobber said, he will be traded or ride pine. Fla has too many D with the Pho deal that occured earlier this summer.
The guy is a wizard with the puck, and would would be a good fit given his price tag and given Ott is so poor on D offensively. Schneider would cost a ton of cash and also is very injury prone. I don\'t think Alfy can run PP1 & PP2 QB given his age and injury history. He will wear fast.

I agree that he is a wasted asset if they dont use him in Florida. With Caber and JayBo, I dont see any room for a PP specialist and Ottawa seems like a nice fit. They wouldnt have to use Alffy at the point and he just has to avoid the injury bug. With only one year left, Ottawa is not married to him long term, and he can use this year as an audition for something long term someplace if not the Sens. Not like the Panthers would need much to move him with all the salary coming in right now for them. Sens could have him for a mid to late pick I bet.

Would make sense. Ottawa\'s defense (as it stands) is atrocious.
