To be clear. I'm not against hitting. I'm a purest Canadian. I love hitting. I just don't think it's a useful stat to be quoted in a player evaluation. Dion Phanuef was famous for laying hits that took him out of the play and created 2 on 1's when he was in Calgary. So while I agree hitting has it's uses, telling me that someone is a "hell of a player" because he lays x number of hits, is a pretty terrible argument IMO.

Hits don’t translate 100% into good play. But it’s good to have someone who will hit. They don’t need to be big hits, but they cause turnovers by younger d-men and wear a team down.
