Unless the other guy overvalues grit and a hot start, I'm not sure that is even enough. Staal isn't doing much so it's not like you're offering two guys who are producing. Plus the other guy would have to drop someone, and looking at your signature, it's not that deep a league so I would suspect it could be at least a decent player.

Also, be careful making counters soon after rejections, though. It could show that you are desperate to land him, which could give the other manager even more of a reason to hold on for the best offer he can get. That is, if he is actually considering dealing him. He may just want to keep him unless you make an offer that blows him away. It also depends on his needs.

Right, he does need grit and an LW to be sure. Perhaps I could throw a D in there as he's short on that as well. I know he's considering letting Benn go due to the slow start but it's also true that neither of these guys are firing on all cylinders right now.

I guess I'm banking on Staal's 'upside'/history and Hartnell's secondary-cats value. I'm not willing to part with any of my higher end guys so if this doesn't work I might have to settle for Toews instead, although then I might be overpaying.

Hartnell is seriously underrated in multi-cat categories...I looked at my team log and this guy has probably overall contributed the most to my team. It's an okay move if the guy you fill in for the empty roster spot is legit but if it's just a random scrub...I'd stay put.
