I've always wrestled with this question: Assuming the utmost good intentions (which is a stretch to begin with...but for the sake of discussion, humor me) - how does any govt entity proactively initiate security protocol to protect its people from harm w/out at the very least encroaching on their civil rights to some degree?

If we accept no right is absolute. Then at what point do we say enough is too much? How is security balanced against freedom? Is it inevitably a sliding scale, a fluid benchmark relative to the perceived threat?

Trudeau almost makes me want to vote... well him and getting that moron Harper out of office.

(And before everyone gets bent out of shape and says "if you don't vote, you can't criticize", I do my civic duty by going and spoiling my ballot as I dream of the day that "None of the above" becomes a legitimate choice on the ballot)
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

    Very tricky questions for sure.

If you don't vote you are the only one who has the right to criticize!

I am very saddened by the terrorist attack in Ottawa.
I am thankful for the soldiers, for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, for WO Patrice Vincent, , who stand on guard for our country,
I am angered that anyone would want to do us harm because of our commitments to democracy, freedom and justice,
I am fearful that we lose our acceptance of each other and forget that together we are so much more than the sum of our parts,
I am grateful to our first responders and Kevin Vickers,
I am touched by our American friends in Pittsburgh,
I am resolved to be a better person and a better citizen,
I am proud to be Canadian.

I wish you all peace in your minds and in your hearts.

This has prolly been asked, but where was the gun Kevin Vickers used? He’s more of a political role than a law enforcement right? The position he holds was there to protect from activists way back when, but now it’s a political role. So he wouldn’t have a gun on him. Would he have to have gone to a gun locker and get his gun from there and then go into action? Anyone know how far away the locker is? Is it in the Caucus room?

Also here’s a pretty heartwarming article. It’s about the people who ran towards the Nathan Cirillo and their heroic acts.

I think I heard that when the shooting started he ran to his desk ( I assume a locked drawer ) to retreive his gun. I also heard that in his 30 year RCMP career, he had never fired it before.

I think th equestion needs to be asked, where did the murderer get his gun.

I don’t know how many people are following this still, but here in Hamilton it’s still big news. A few quick things that’s happened over the weekend:

    - Everyone knows about the Leafs, Sens, Canadiens thing they did on Saturday
    - Nathan Cirillo’s son dropped the puck at the bulldog’s game (on Friday I think). It was pretty touching. The away team actually wore an army design jersey.
    - On Friday Cirillo went on the Highway of Hero’s home. People were on every bridge from Trenton to Hamilton (3-4hr drive so 400km-ish) with Canadian flags and signs. I went to the bridge just close to my house, and wow, really moving. Firetrucks had their ladders up with flags hanging off them. The highway 6 bridge had a massive flag over it. Think Parliament Hill sized flag. At one point a convoy of tow trucks drove behind the police escort apparently.
    - Today was his funeral. It was an invite only to the church they had it at, but you could go to the Bull Dogs arena and watch a live stream of it. I went on my lunch to a road that the hearse passed. Just to say bye to someone that without me knowing at the time, had quite a few connections too.
    - Cirillo’s son was dressed up in the same uniform that Cirillo was in when he passed (not the same one, but same design).

Here’s to a brave man that unknowingly touched millions of people’s lives.
