While I really like Tavares in fantasy hockey... with the major "hot start", I think somebody could probably get Toews++ for Tavares.
That's not a bad deal. While the Isles look good, I still think Tavares shakes out to +0 whereas Toews should land around +30.
That's significant... and I'd trade about 10-15 points for that PLUS in multi-cat leagues.

Tavares has 90pt potential.
Toews is more like a 75pt player.
Considering those numbers & +/- (as mentioned above)... I think it's close.

I'd still want Tavares.
Point being, though, is about "trade perception"... and if somebody gets a nice player to go with Jon Toews... it might be worth their while.

Agreed, you expanded on it better than I but that's what I was driving at.

And you're right that if you get Toews++ in return based off that perception then you win the trade handily because the actual value of the two players is actually not too far off so the ++ becomes the gravy on top
