Eric Staal undergoes surgery to repair core muscle injury

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that center Eric Staal underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury suffered during off-season training. The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

“Eric notified us of the injury late last week, and flew to Raleigh and then Philadelphia to be evaluated,” said Francis. “By having this procedure now, Dr. Meyers believes Eric will be able to return to action for training camp and be at full health for the start of the regular season.”

Oh boy.... I sure hope he is ready for the start of the season but he'll need time to heal and then train. I'm sure he'll be healthy by then, but he obviously won't have had a full summer of training prior to then.. and he spent last offseason injured too. I am tempering my expectations, let's say...

Agreed. He's been remarkably durable during his career thus far, but the trend is starting to concern me just a tad.

This is rough but I'm just happy it isn't another knee injury, thats something I've been worried about because that injury from the WC last summer was pretty bad. It's too bad he's missed off-season training but hopefully he can get himself going again.

He's historically a very slow starter every season anyways, but best believe I'm gonna pepper his owner with messages for all of October and November to try to pry him away and play the injury card

I own him in 1 of my 3 leagues so I'm used to dealing with the frustrations for the first couple of months haha!

Not withstanding the fact he was underwhelming last year - add in an injury, and I'm not big on E. Staal.

I think he could be a little stiff to start the season, but otherwise I think he'll be fine. Carolina is not a strong team, but someone still has to put up points.

grrrr, why do they wait until almost August to get their surgeries? Why not get it as soon as the season is over so it's over with and you can rehab?

Apparently this was a new injury during the offseason - he tore it during offseson training - not a lingering injury from last season.

RALEIGH — Eric Staal showed no lingering effects from offseason surgery Friday as the Carolina Hurricanes’ captain put in his first informal skate at Raleigh Center Ice.

Staal pushed himself at times on the ice, looking anything but tentative.

“I feel good,” he said. “I just want to continue to take steps before (training) camp opens and then look forward to the start of the year.

What is the update on this??? He hasn't appeared in any pre-sesason games. I'm debating on trading Landeskog for him and Nieto.
