Both teams are heading into the off-season with plenty of questions. There are certainly plenty of rumors out there that have the Sharks looking elsewhere for goalie help. The fact that Stalock got so many starts down the stretch to change his FA status raises some questions in my mind as well about where they see Niemi. That being said, the Sharks may not move anywhere on the goalie front and likely will have at least a competitive squad again next season.
Of course, the Penguins are the source of plenty of rumors as well. Neal having an affordable contract could make him an attractive trade piece. Clearly Neal's value takes something of a hit moving to another team. At the end of the day though, the amount of bang Pittsburgh gets for its dollars invested in Neal lead me to believe they will look to move other players ahead of Neal.
If goalies are hard to come by in your league (i.e most good ones will be kept), then I can see merit in such a move, otherwise, I think Neal's situation is a little less risky.

I'm definitely looking at it from a risk vs risk point of view. Who is the more risky choice? From what I've read, at the moment, Niemi is the bigger risk. I recently traded away Bernier for a high 2nd round pick so I could keep MacKinnon. I was all ready to go into the sunset with my 5 keepers (Lundy, Malkin, P.Kane, MacKinnon and Neal) while everyone else fights over goalies then draft scraps to pair with Lundy. Then this GM, who's notorious for doing high profile trades (Niemi hasn't even played a game for him yet), comes along and gets my mind working again. Dang him. Dang.

Niemi is a slight, but growing risk to me. I'm not sure how much San Jose trusts the guy to get it done any more. I know McLellan thought of going to Stalock earlier than he did this playoffs.

I think niemi is pretty devalued right now, as he may very well be a backup goalie next year. If you want to 'buy-low' on him, you could probably get him for less than Neal, but then again some of your non-keepers like St Louis or Vanek or Pietrangelo aren't much of a step-down from Neal. So sure, do it, but be prepared to keep one of those other guys instead if Niemi looks to be a backup goalie come september. When do you have to decide who your keepers are?

@Chunkys_Choice: We decide on keepers in late August so there's still a lot of time to decide on what to do. I'm not sure Pietrangelo or Vanek are at Neal's level. Saying that St.Louis is definitely a player to watch as he seems to have found his game again in NY during the playoffs..

In a Keep 5 , I would stick with Neal - more risk with Niemi. I think there will be an equivalent goalie available. May have to try for an option such as St.Louis goalies if that is available. Holtby? others?

Neal for me. I will never bank on goalies in H2H. Never. I'd way rather have the better performing forward, and then draft your other two goalies.
Keep Neal, I consider him to be the better fantasy asset. Also, you have Lundqvist and keeping two goalies out of five keeps is too much to invest in a single position.

Neal is the easy choice for me in this league. You are only keeping 5 and you already have lundqvist in tow. Neal provides you much more consistency and there is a lot of risk with Niemi right now. jcairns is right, goalies fluctuate too much, especially in head to head. Take the established forward.
I don't see a scenario where the Penguins trade James Neal. You just don't get players who produce 40-40 seasons at $5mil / season. It just doesn't happen. Despite the obvious objections, I think Letang makes a whole lot more sense to deal, given his $7.25m salary cap hit and the defensive inconsistencies. I feel like Letang is probably the third most talented player on the Penguins after Sid/Geno, but he is just prone to too many lapses when the chips are down. Despite him having a wonderful playoffs after returning from STROKE, I think Letang is on his way out of Pittsburgh.
For this reason, I would much prefer Neal in this deal. He is still a top20 fantasy asset when he is healthy, and if he can play a full season more likely a top10 asset. Niemi has more question marks, to be quite honest, and because of that I'll keep the stud forward who is likely still attached to Malkin's hip during the regular season.
