Soooo... with the penguins salary predicament next year, why don\'t you see caputi making the team in a depth role and playing perhaps on the third line with staal?

I mean pittsburgh literally have 5 centers and only 2 wings under contract for next season heading into free agency, and their money situation is going to be tight enough that I don\'t know that they will be able to sign enough talented wings (they need 2 checking line wings, and approx. 5 wings for the top 3 lines) via free agency to fill out their roster.

Caputi is cheap, why not give him a shot? It certainly would be a much cheaper alternative to finding a free agent for the same roster slot.

I\'m by no means suggesting that he\'ll get \"100 points next year,\" but if they put him with staal on the third line, I could see 20-30 possibly. I just don\'t see why they would hold him back if they are so strapped for cap room and when he\'s pretty much ready...

just devil\'s advocate here lanky, but what makes you think that caputi is \"pretty much ready\"?

not very many players are ready for a jump right from junior hockey to the NHL.

i do agree though that pittsburgh is going to have to be playing a lot of cheap (inexperienced) wingers in order to avoid cap trouble in the years ahead. maybe they will intentionally delay using the talented wingers they have so that they aren\'t all rushed in at the same time, and therfore demanding bigger money at the same time... if that makes sense to anyone but me.

no that makes sense, but caputi was just signed recently, so he\'ll have three seasons (including the upcoming one) of play before he becomes an RFA...

I do understand that there\'s a fear of rushing him, but I it seems to me that with crosby only signed for five years and then becoming a UFA, they need to start stacking their basket now in my opinion... so that caputi can be a factor in time to help in the playoffs.

If they wait two years, by the time he\'s got his game in the NHL, crosby will be pretty much done with his contract...

I don\'t know... it just seems to make sense to give him a chance this year (if in the prospect camp he earns a chance)...

Is dobber maybe suggesting that he won\'t be ready to earn a slot in camp yet?
