"The deal pays him $25 million in each of the 2013 through 2015 seasons. The deal includes a $27.5 million club option for 2016 and a $12.5 million buyout."

What does Philly reasonably expect to get for Lee? Sounds Luongo-esque!

They're probably gunning for a big package of top prospects.

Several teams are in dire need of an ace like Lee and in baseball there is no salary cap.

    Different situation than hockey.

    LOL- I know the differences.

The point is 62.5 M for the next 2 years when Lee is 35 and 36--> No thanks. A big package of top prospects?? That doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah, its unlikely but you never know right?

The other top pitcher on the market is Peavy. Lee is easily be the best player available via trade right now.

Strongly disagree. Plus, the Phillies could certainly offer to cover $10-20m of that. Lee is still near the top of his game and has never been an overpowering pitcher who primarily relies on fastball velocity. Will they get several top prospects? No but they should darn sure be able to get a package that includes one and something else. #1 Starters are very, very tough to get in MLB, regardless of salary.

Saying that they cover $10-20 M changes everything. And you even agree that they won't get several top prospects. I don't think you strongly disagree with me at all.

Interesting, the Phillies just signed Cuban fireballer Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.

So I decided to look a little deeper at Lee.

    2008 WAR 7.1
    2009 WAR 6.5
    2010 WAR 7.0
    2011 WAR 6.5
    2012 WAR 4.9
2013- WAR 2.8 (on pace for approximately 4.2)

    2014 at 35 ?? $31+ M
    2015 at 36 ?? $31+ M (I am factoring in the buyout after 2015)

So while Lee is still an ace (#16 currently this season), he is starting to decline and without PEDs there is no reason to predict a huge improvement back to his production levels of several years ago.

I agree with dong that due to Lee's stuff his decline should not be as rapid and he should be an effective pitcher into his late 30s. However, will a team want to spend $31 M on a pitcher for the next two seasons that in all likelihood will not be much higher than a mid 4 WAR player? And what would you give up for that player right now? A package of prime prospects? No way. Maybe 1 decent #10-#15 club prospect with a couple A Ball prospects.

Now if Philly picks up part of the contract, then that changes everything. If Philly pays $20 M of the contract, the prospects they receive back will be significantly better.

It will be interesting to see what happens. It only takes one stupid team (Anaheim or LA) to throw logic out the window.

I think the Dodgers would gladly take his salary on. They spend like drunken sailors but I don't know how much they'd be able to give back. Maybe Dee Gordon and another mid level prospect. And you did make a fair point about his WAR but his numbers have still been quite good. Top end pitching is still tough to get, just ask the Giants. You can never have too much of it.

You're right. I didn't know LA was receiving $340 million per year on the TV contract.
