At this point, I don't think Ovie is worth $3 million more than Backstrom from a fantasy perspective. And yes, OEL is due a big raise, but he'll still be one of the more valuable d-man out there, especially when you consider his $5.5 million cap hit is currently tied for 17th among defencemen, a number which could drop precipitously with Mark Streit, Kris Letang, Justin Schultz, PK Subban, Michael del Zotto, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk, Dmitry Kulikov, Jake Gardiner, and Justin Faulk all due some serious cash in the next two seasons.
Suddenly that $5.5 million looks very reasonable.
I'd stick with Backstrom/OEL (combined 11.5 million) as keepers over Ovie/Brunner (presumably, combined 10 million).
